Schindler Family Attends Mass for Terri Schiavo Hosted by Ave Maria University

St. Petersburg, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The Schindler family attended a special Mass on Tuesday, which marked the fourth anniversary of the painful starvation and dehydration euthanasia death of Terri Schiavo. Ave Maria University, a Florida-based Catholic college, hosted the mass, which saw the entire Schindler family attend.

Bob and Mary Schindler, Terri's parents, joined their other children Bobby Schindler and Suzanne Vitadamo for a ceremony in Terri's honor.

As the Schindlers prayed with participants for other disabled people who face the same euthanasia concerns, they placed a picture of Terri on her wedding day on the altar and joined more than 400 people in remembering her life.

The Mass was part of the International Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Terri Schindler Schiavo that the Schindler family jointly co-sponsors with the Terri Schiavo foundation and Priests for Life.

The two organizations established this day last year to foster education, prayer, and activism regarding discrimination against the disabled.

"God is using Terri to impact the world in a very special way," Bobby Schindler told the News Press.

Thomas Monaghan, founder and chancellor of Ave Maria University, told the newspaper the college was happy to help with the ceremony.

“We're very big on pro-life,” he said. “Our purpose is to fight evil and pro-life is center stage, and that’s where we want to be.”

Fr. Frank Pavone, who was with Bobby and Suzanne at Terri’s bedside as she died, recalls that painful day and the support from pro-life advocates and others.

"As we consoled Terri and prayed with her, what I felt most strongly was the presence of countless people around the world who, by their love, prayers, and tears, accompanied Terri and her family through those difficult days," he said. "I am confident that these same individuals, families, and Churches will want to observe Terri’s Day."

Religious, Moral Issues are Above Obama's Pay Grade

SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 18 /Christian Newswire/ -- President Barack Obama delivered a speech yesterday during the Notre Dame Graduation commencement ceremony that was rife with heretical views of Christianity.

Woman Fights to Have Comatose Son Euthanized

An Australian woman would like doctors to administer a fatal dose of morphine to her comatose son.

Joanne Dunn wants her son to die in her arms. Mark Leigep, 34, has been in a vegetative state for more than three years.

"Mark isn't coming back," Dunn said. "He's my baby and they should let my baby go."

President Obama's appearance at the Notre Dame commencement exercises produced an enormous outpouring of journalistic coverage.

Prior to the event, the atmosphere was so feverish that when Duncan Maxell Anderson concocted a story based on the idea that Obama had donated his speaking fee to defray lost alumni contributions, many readers failed to recognize that it was a satire.

On the GetReligion site, Terry Mattingly continued to insist that reporters should get their facts straight. That was, alas, a losing battle.

USA Today provided live blogging on the event, with a panel of experts (including Joseph Lawler, son of CWN editor Phil Lawler) offering their perspectives.

When he addressed the commencement audience, Father John Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame, was in effect making his own observations on the controversy. Father Jenkins let his enthusiasm for President Obama show through clearly; it cannot be a coincidence that he used the word "hope" five times in his first five opening paragraphs. . .

It appears that Fordham doesn't want to appear any more Catholic than Georgetown or Notre Dame.

Fordham’s Folly (university conceals its decision to honor pro-abort)

The New York Post reports that Fordham University concealed its decision to honor New York’s pro-abortion Mayor Michael Bloomberg from Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York.

Bloomberg received an honorary degree last weekend at Fordham’s commencement and also spoke briefly at the ceremony.

“Dolan was ‘unaware that the mayor was speaking/getting a degree’ at Saturday’s commencement at the Jesuit school’s Bronx campus, his spokesman, Joseph Zwilling, wrote in an e-mail yesterday,” the Post reported.

Fordham has a history of honoring pro-abortion public figures and of failing to consult with the archbishop of New York. Cardinal Edward Egan, who served as New York’s archbishop until he was succeeded last month by Archbishop Dolan, rebuked the university last fall after the Fordham School of Law bestowed an honor on pro-abortion Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. . .

Pavone remarked on the nature of abortion, which he called "the opposite of love," and President Obama, whom he said has dishonored the presidency by supporting abortion.

Top Obama Aide Tells Pro-Life Advocate, "Not Our Goal to Reduce Abortions"

Two days before President Obama’s commencement address at Notre Dame, I was at the White House for one of the meetings that he spoke about. About twenty of us with differing views on abortion were brought in to find “common ground.” But the most important point that came from the meeting was perhaps a slip from an Obama aide.

It revealed that what many people believe -- including high-profile pro-life leaders who support Obama -- is sorely wrong.

Ask nearly anyone, “What is Obama’s goal on abortion?” They'll answer, “Reduce the number of abortions.” A Notre Dame professor and priest insisted this in a television debate after Obama’s speech. The Vatican newspaper reported it. Rush Limbaugh led a spirited debate on his radio program the next day based on this premise.

But that’s not what his top official in charge of finding “common ground” says.

Melody Barnes, the Director of Domestic Policy Council and a former board member of Emily’s List, led the meeting. As the dialogue wound down, she asked for my input.

I noted that there are three main ways the administration can reach its goals: by what it funds, its messages from the bully pulpit, and by what it restricts. It is universally agreed that the role of parents is crucial, so government should not deny parents the ability to be involved in vital decisions. The goals need to be clear; the amount of funding spent to reduce unintended pregnancies and abortions is not a goal.

The U.S. spends nearly $2 billion each year on contraception programs -- programs which began in the 1970s -- and they've clearly failed. We need to take an honest look at why they are not working.

Melody testily interrupted to state that she had to correct me. “It is not our goal to reduce the number of abortions.”

The room was silent.

The goal, she insisted, is to “reduce the need for abortions.”

Well, this raises a lot of questions. . .

These people are simply sick.

Stacy Palmer, editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy, said the summit was unprecedented. “We only learnt about it afterwards, by accident. Normally these people are happy to talk good causes, but this is different – maybe because they don’t want to be seen as a global cabal,” he said. . .

Obama's Own Words Bring Abortion Dialogue to "Screeching Halt," Says Bishop

KANSAS CITY, Missouri, May 21, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Although the University of Notre Dame has defended its invitation of President Obama for the sake of dialogue on abortion, Obama's own remark Sunday that the opposing views were "irreconcilable" brought dialogue to a "screeching halt," said Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City-St. Joseph, MO.

"I think the message of the day was this - that the President of Notre Dame said that they had invited the President of the United States and decided to honor him for the sake of dialogue," said Bishop Finn in an interview with the diocesan newspaper the Catholic Key earlier this week.

"The President got up and said that the differences that we have on abortion - namely the Catholic Church's staunch opposition to abortion and his staunch support of abortion were 'irreconcilable,'" he continued. "And at that moment, it would seem to me that the dialogue came to a screeching halt.

"Father Jenkins' expressed desire for dialogue, whether it was well-founded or justified, at that point got thrown back in his face. The President shut the door on dialogue by saying that there was not going to be any change in his position on abortion and he understood that there was not going to be any change in the Church's position on abortion.

"I am glad that Mr. Obama was so clear."

Asked whether the Church could join with the Obama administration "in common effort," Finn replied that while the two share many goals, "We're fighting for our lives - literally. We are attempting to protect real unborn children by the thousands. We're fighting for the right to exercise a rightly-formed conscientious difference with public policy."

Bishop Finn warned against "taking a 'wait and see' approach" to advancing the pro-life and pro-family cause. "I think the rug is already being pulled out from under us," he said. "If we sit back and allow ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of peace and cooperation in regards to these things, then we will lose these battles and, later, wonder why."

One thing the Supreme Court Sotomayor pick tells us is that Obama’s recent talk promising to find common ground was just talk.

The Puerto Rican from the Bronx who went to Catholic schools is Obama’s pick to replace Justice Souter on the Supreme Court.

As Americans United for Life (AUL)‘s president Charmaine Yoest points out:

“For all the President’s talk of finding ‘common ground,’ this appointment completely contradicts that hollow promise. Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s judicial philosophy undermines common ground. She is a radical pick that divides America. She believes the role of the Court is to set policy, which is exactly the philosophy that led to the Supreme Court turning into the ‘National Abortion Control Board,’ denying the American people the right to be heard on this critical issue. This appointment would provide a pedestal for an avowed judicial activist to impose her personal policy and beliefs onto others from the bench, at a time when the Courts are at a crossroad and critical abortion regulations supported by the vast majority of Americans like partial-birth abortion and informed consent laws lie in the balance.”

Thinking that a liberal judge would certainly support refugees from foreign lands seeking freedom in America will get you no place with Sotomayor when abortion is on the line.

Chinese refugees from their forced-abortion laws are attempting to save a life, father and mother both.

Not so, says Sotomayor. Fathers fleeing with mothers because of abortion aren't really "refugees." What??? Who does she hate more: babies or males?

Will the New England Catholic Health Care System Participate in Abortion?

Most Americans are familiar with the term “Pandora’s Box’ but that same percentage has no idea what “Caritas Christi” is so this is where my story must begin.

Caritas Christi (CC) was established in 1985 and is New England's largest community-based hospital network and is a comprehensive, integrated health care delivery network providing community-based medicine and tertiary care in eastern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

The CC mission statement reads in part:

“Being part of a Catholic Health Care System means that ours is a ministry with roots in the teachings of the Church and the Gospel message of Jesus. At Caritas Christi we are not just another provider of health care. We are a continuation of the healing ministry of Jesus. Our Mission and Values are the forces that drive us toward achieving Exceptional Care.”

Earlier this year something changed in the CC dynamic when it announced a joint venture with Centene Corporation in a bid to provide government-subsidized health insurance in Massachusetts. In fact the announcement sent shock waves through Massachusetts Citizens for Life which immediately issued a press release stating in part:

“Massachusetts Citizens for Life sent a letter on Thursday to the President and CEO of Caritas Christi, Dr. Ralph de la Torre, requesting a meeting as soon as possible to address the concerns members of the organization have about the Caritas Christi joint venture with Centene Corporation that offers insurance through the Commonwealth Care Health Plan.

“Caritas Christi has said it will provide a full range of family planning services. The public has learned that this terminology is code for abortion and abortion-related services. Mass. Citizens sought the meeting to give Caritas Christi the chance to refute these assumptions and to assure the general public that it would not be providing such services.

“Since we have not heard from Dr. de la Torre, Mass. Citizens must regretfully assume that, in fact, Caritas Christi would abandon its twenty-three year commitment to protecting the lives of unborn babies and their mothers.

"Our members will be contacting the offices of Caritas individually to express their outrage that Caritas would take this anti-life position.”

On March 12, 2009, another shock wave went through the pro-life ranks when Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Family Health Plan announced on March 12 that, “it was awarded the contract to manage healthcare services for Commonwealth Care members in Massachusetts. The health plan is a partnership between Celtic Group Inc. (Celtic), a subsidiary of Centene Corporation, and Caritas Christi Health Care (Caritas)."

The facts about this “Commonwealth Plan” are disturbing on a very basic level. The Massachusetts Commonwealth Care plan is the very type of "universal health-care insurance" that President Barack Obama wants to impose on the rest of the country. Indeed, proponents of national health-care insurance always point to the Massachusetts program as a model of a successful plan.
Second, in order to be an approved health-care provider eligible for payment under the Massachusetts plan, the law requires that the hospital must provide the full range of “reproductive services," such as abortion, sterilization, contraception, and counseling that recommends such services. All of these things are directly contrary to the teaching of the Church. This is what we have to look forward to from Obama's proposed national plan.

Furthermore, Caritas Christi cannot participate in the approved plan without agreeing to provide the mandatory “reproductive health services” that are in direct violation to Catholic teaching. . .

Hopefully the Swiss courts will euthanize Dignitas.

Dignitas Assisted Suicide Clinic in Switzerland Probed, Killed Man With Depression

Zurich, Switzerland (LifeNews.com) -- The Dignitas assisted suicide facility in Switzerland is coming under investigation for allegedly killing a man with depression. Under the euthanasia law in Switzerland, someone can only be killed in an assisted suicide if they suffer from a terminal illness.

Swiss Judge Philippe Barboni has ordered an investigation of the death of Andrei Haber, a Romanian who lived in Fribourg.

Relatives notified Swiss authorities that he had planned to kill himself at the Dignitas facility.

"This case presents a particular fact: that the person didn't suffer from a serious or incurable disease, provoking severe pain. His motives were essentially psychological," Judge Barboni said, according to Swiss media reports.

Care Not Killing, a British-based group that opposes assisted suicide and euthanasia, commented on Haber's death and the resulting probe, which it called felicitous given that euthanasia advocates appear to prey on the depressed. . .

Klan Barrenhood seems to be quite concerned about the crimes they are perpetrating, they are worried that if their death chambers are shut down it will result in "people of color" losing their jobs. They don't seem nearly as concerned with the "people of color" who make up nearly 40% of their victims.

Abortion Advocate Chides Pro-Abortion Movement for Ignoring Lila Rose Videos

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Activist and muckraker Lila Rose has single-handedly helped gain national exposure for the glaring problem of the abortion industry covering up cases of sexual abuse of minors by encouraging them to get abortions. largely silent in response, one pro-abortion activists suggests her colleagues wake up.

Rose has taken it upon herself to go to abortion centers in states such as Arizona, Indiana and Tennessee and to find out what they would say to an underage woman who allegedly is a victim of statutory rape by a much-older boyfriend.

The results have shocked even veteran pro-life advocates with the emotionless ways in which Planned Parenthood staff members go out of their way to not report the sexual abuse to authorities. They even go further by encouraging Rose to hide the identify of her boyfriend from a state judge so she can avoid the state's parental involvement laws and have a secret abortion without her parents knowing.

The nationally-recognized pro-abortion groups like NARAL and Emily's List have ignores the videos and Planned Parenthood's response has mostly been to minimize their content, promise to do better, and to guard their taxpayer funding.

Mandy Van Deven, a writer at the pro-abortion blog RH Reality Check, says this response is problematic and that the pro-abortion movement will be found by the public to be guilty of an avoidance group-think if it fails to respond more appropriately.

Van Deven doesn't have much regard for Rose and her undercover "Dateline NBC"-style activism, but she acknowledges that they are effective.

"Though those methods raise many worthwhile ethical questions, few would have batted an eye had she not captured a handful of questionable encounters with Planned Parenthood staff," she writes, saying Rose's efforts are "damning" for her side of the abortion debate. . .
