Father John Corapi on the Evils of Socialism
fathercorapi,com ^ | 4/2/2009 | Father John Corapi

At a time when it surely seems that capitalism has run amuck and poised the world on the edge of economic ruin, the temptation is very strong for the pendulum to swing too far left into the failed and immoral territory of socialism. Historically pure socialism has never worked, philosophically it cannot work, and morally it is inherently evil (because it undermines the right of private property ownership, an inherent human right) and hence should not be given a chance to work.

The response might be that what we have at the moment isn’t pure socialism. The problem is that the moment is incredibly fluid and the direction toward a more radical form of socialism under way with frightening speed. Unless, of course, you believe the politicians and their appointees whose stock-in-trade has become lies, deception, and self-interest.

The common error is to think that socialism helps the poor and disenfranchised. As Pope Leo XIII pointed out as long ago as 1891 in his Encyclical “Rerum Novarum”, socialism does not help the poor. Rather, it reduces everyone to the same lowest common denominator of poverty and misery, while at the same time drying up the very sources of capital.

If you've never heard Father Corapi, you are in for a real treat. You can see him Saturday & Sunday nights on EWTN. With the Easter season upon us. He may not be on next weekend. So check your local listing for the times. But he will definitely be on this Saturday but not Palm Sunday night. There will be a Palm Sunday Mass celebration by Pope Benedict instead.

Socialism is based on three sins to start: lies, coveting and theft. At its core, it is idolatry, for it is the vain attempt to achieve a Utopian society apart from God and the values He shares with mankind.

Excellent post. I will add that socialism takes away freedom and individualism, the fundamentals that our great nation was founded upon.

Yes. And his personal history and journey to the priesthood is one of the most remarkable stories I have ever heard.

And his holy mother, who never gave up praying for her wayward boy, should rank up there with St.Monica as an example of the power of prayer.

I’m of the opinion that this isn’t socialism. This is communism. They don’t just want to have socialism. They want to RULE. To rule they must have total control. Gun control, control you fuel, your food, your money, thus control you life. They want total control over EVERY aspect of your life, from cradle to grave. These people are the pure evil of life. They are as evil as anything that ever walked the face of this earth. They love communism. They love Marx. They love Lenin. They love, adore and covet Stalin. This is what they want. 100% RED communism for the entire world. They are not Marxist. They are true believing Bolshevik’s.

While his regular Sunday night program may be pre-empted, watch the EWTN schedule for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday for Fr Corapi’s series on the Triduum to be broadcast. I think they’ve aired it every year since it was recorded. A good and faithful servant, is Fr. John Corapi. I was blessed to see him at a conference once. Rode in the same elevator with him. A very humble priest.

Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis—The definitive refutation of Socialism by Ludwig von Mises. Nothing more need be said, nor have the collectivists ever refuted it (they don't even try, because once they've read it, they realize there's nothing they can do or say to salvage their belief system).

Good to know. Thanks for the “heads up.” I’ll check it out.

I just came from a mission service at our parish given by another priest of the same order as Fr. Corapi, Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT). They do wonderful work around the world and their faith foundation is great. This priest was really preaching it!!!

its like they never read the Bible at all! Acts 5:9 clearly states the punishment for defying the Lord.

Yep, I'll never forget the story he told one Sunday night about Catholics going to Confession.
He told the story that he was happy to see so many Catholics receiving Holy Communion on Sundays but not many in the Confessional line on Saturdays...he said something to the effect, “I guess they think they were immaculately conceived.” LOL
