Carroll: Tancredo's next crusade?
The Denver Post ^ | 04/05/2009 12:30:00 AM MDT | Vincent Carroll

What do you talk about at lunch with Tom Tancredo? I thought I knew, but to my surprise (and relief), we spent much of the hour discussing the wisdom of legalizing drugs rather than rehashing our disagreements over illegal immigrants.

"The status quo isn't working," Tancredo says, meaning the war on drugs has failed — spectacularly. And while that's hardly a novel insight, most people who reach it don't take the next step of questioning the drug war itself.

There are other conservatives who are expressing skepticism with the War on Drugs.

Whooda thunk? I knew Mr. Tancredo was a member of the Republican Liberty Caucus when he was in Congress, but I thought he was a staunch Drug Warrior in the likes of Biden, Bush I, Bennett, etc. etc. etc. Now I have just ANOTHER reason to proclaim him as a hero of mine!

So Tancredo thinks legalizing marijuana will “defund” Mexican drug lords enough to be worth a look?

All that will happen will be many more people smoking damaging stuff that encourages nothing but sitting around and eating while off in another world.

And the Mexican drug lords will pump even more of the harder stuff here, because that will still be desired and still won't be taxed.

Do you really want the federal Government to keep on telling what is good or bad to put in our bodies... Didn’t prohibition tell you something???

Decriminalize marijuana and let people grow a limit of plants, that’s it. No taxes, no regulation and keep it illegal to sell, transport or distribute it or drive under the influence. Problem solved...

The States can decide where to go on this issue, & they should be free to be as strict or as lenient on this issue (& a whole host of others) that the people so desire. That’s why we have a 10th Amendment.

Excellent post.
Tanc has always been a flake.

Duncan Hunter for years was the leader against the illegals and the author of the border fence bill.

Here in San Diego, our southern border is Mexico and Hunter
Never advocated legalizing drugs.

How many countries have legalized marijuana, such that it is available to be bought and sold, grown and used?

That would be sensible. But you can’t stop the trafficking in a scenario like that. You just can’t.

When I was growing up, drug dealing, in my peer group, was a gentleman’s game. It was all very casual. We knew there was violence and smuggling some where along the line, but we never saw any of that. Get involved with blacks dealing dope though, and the knives and guns came out immediately.

I’ve asked this of ChrisinAR: How many countries in the world legally allow marijuana to be grown, sold, bought, and used as you’d like to use it?

When you get that answer, tell me why you believe it should work here.

You’ll stop demand for foreign marijuana overnight, and give people the right to grow a plant. It can’t more simple than that. Enforce the laws on the books against selling and transport same as now but the demand will be dramatically less.
