"Utterly Appalled" Bishop Bruskewitz Issues Stinging Condemnation to "Formerly Catholic" ND

LINCOLN, Nebraska, April 9, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of the Lincoln Diocese today made public his condemnation of the Notre Dame scandal. His comments bring the number of U.S. bishops to 30 protesting the school's invitation to President Obama to speak at commencement and receive an honorary law degree May 17.

Bishop Bruskewitz supplied the letter addressed to University president Fr. John Jenkins today to the Cardinal Newman Society, who is hosting a petition against the scandal, now bearing well over a quarter million signatures (http://www.notredamescandal.com).

"Permit me to add my name as well to the long list of Bishops of the Catholic Church who are utterly appalled at your dedication to immorality and wrong-doing represented by your support for the obscenity called 'The Vagina Monologues' and your absolute indifference to the murderous abortion program and beliefs of this President of the United States," reads the brief letter, dated April 3.

"The fact that you have some sort of past connection with the State of Nebraska makes it all the more painful that the Catholic people here have to see your betrayal of the moral teachings of the Catholic Church," Bruskewitz wrote.  "I can assure you of my prayers for your conversion, and for the conversion of your formerly Catholic University."

"Faithful Catholics will be thankful for Bishop Bruskewitz's clear and pointed criticism of the abuse of Catholic identity at Notre Dame and should remain vigilant in their prayers for an end to the scandal," commented Patrick J. Reilly, president of The Cardinal Newman Society.

The bishops who have so far gone public with their disapproval of Notre Dame's invitation of Obama (in alphabetical order) are:

1. Bishop John D'Arcy - Fort Wayne-South Bend, IN
2. Bishop Gregory Aymond - Austin, TX
3. Archbishop Daniel Buechlein - Indianapolis, IN
4. Bishop Robert Baker - Birmingham, AL

6. Archbishop Eusebius Beltran - Oklahoma City, OK
7. Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Cantú - San Antonio, TX
8. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo - Houston, TX
9. Archbishop Timothy Dolan - New York, NY
10. Bishop Thomas Doran - Rockford, IL
11. Auxiliary Bishop John Dougherty - Scranton, PA
12. Cardinal Francis George - Chicago, IL; President, USCCB
13. Archbishop José Gomez - San Antonio, TX
14. Bishop William Higi - Lafayette, IN

Jenkins is just a front man. he wouldn’t be doing this unless had support from his board or, I speculate, some bishops.

The argument put forward that it’s OK because Obama isn’t a Catholic politician is a real howler.

No idea. But we need to get away from liberals presenting themselves as fake Catholic experts on social issues and politics.

The Pope needs publicly denounce the invitation.

Someone in authority in the church needs to uninvite the resident. If there is such an authority.

I heard Fr. Jenkins subsequently requested Obama for keynote because his first selection, the President of the Euthanasia Society, was busy.

If the Pope speaks out on this, it will likely be after Easter. It looks as if the bishops are doing a drip, drip, drip on Jenkins to keep up the news on a daily basis, not all at once. Then save the best for last.

You wrote:

“The Catholich Church will get a black eye from this one, and won’t gain anything.”

You are sincere, but sincerely misunderstand the situation. Who exactly will be giving out that black eye to the Church? If you understood this the way Catholics - faithful, pro-life Catholics - do, you would know the following:

1) Black eyes from the MSM or left-leaning babykilling scumbags don’t bother us. We WANT those black eyes, expect those black eyes, and even need those black eyes as proof we are resisting Satan and the World.

2) There is no “picking your battles” ethic in the pro-life movement. That is exactly what got us this pro-death culture in the first place. No, instead, we need a full court press, use both barrels, fire until your empty, use the holdout pistol, then beat them with the empty gun approach to ANYTHING that even smacks of the Church, its bishops, priests, universities, schools or hospitals caving into, offering up a single inch, etc. to the culture of death or its benighted servants.

3) What you are suggesting - even if you do not recognize it as such - is a secularist, baby killing eain’t so bad, “sheesh, do we always have to bring in the pro-life argument” approach that has gotten us more than 40,000,000 dead babies in the US, and damn it all, we’re not taking it anymore.

4) For the most well known Catholic university in the history of the United States to contemplate, invite, and award a degree to a man who believes infantacide is morally acceptable is not only repugnant, it is of the order of magnitude - if I may wax Old Testament here for a moment - that one almost hopes (almost!) that South Bend might be cleansed of that apostate institution, that “formerly Catholic” university, through the scorching of the very earth on which it rests. And if you don’t get that, if that seems so utterly outrageous to you that you would rather have Obama speak there than that, then you do not understand how angry many Catholics are about this.

Tried your method, for approximately the last 40 years.

Didn't work.

The bishops looking the other way has simply emboldened the culture of death. More importantly, it has convinced wavering and imperfectly catechized Catholics that it just isn't that big a deal to kill babies, because the bishops haven't said anything.

That is what has brought us to this pass.

Moreover, Obama accepted this invitation because he saw it as an opportunity to neutralize the Catholic opposition ("See? The Catholics invited me to their flagship university, and they must therefore approve of me.") At least he's been disabused of that clever notion.

I have no doubt you are completely pro-life r9etb, but I’m not sure you understand how much would be made of pro-baby butchery pres. O. being honoured at high-profile Catholic kolludje by powerful, influential pro-baby butcherists within the Church. If nothing was said about it, it would be a HUGE victory for the pro-baby butcherists, and they would use the silence as a club to demonstrate baby butchery isn’t a big deal in any future fights.

If your own bishop is not (yet) on this list, find him on this clickable United Sates Diocese-finder Map and urge him to speak out. Emphasize that his voice is needed, not only to censure Notre Dame and expose Obama's shocking anti-life policies, but also to support his brother bishop (Bishop John D'Arcy of Ft. Wayne/South Bend.) Most bishops are nervous about speaking out on matters pertaining to "other dioceses" unless they realize that their help is needed to support a brother bishop.

YES, WE CAN
STOP OBAMA
at
NOTRE DAME
Ping List

This is meant to be an AD-HOC action list to (selectively) report and urge specific actions to stop Obama and win the Battle of Notre Dame. This is not just for Catholics. It's for anybody who wants --- in the words of Mary of Nazareth--- to "put down the mighty from their thrones" (baby-killers in high places) and to "lift up the humble" (tiny infants and their valiant defenders).

*****
Unless told otherwise, I will cheerfully keep you on my list.

If you want me to delete your name, I will just as cheerfully remove you if you will send me a "Private Message".

I'm asking for "Private Message" for deletions only, to ensure that I see your request.

We have the momentum. Let's push on and win this one.
