Providence College has blocked a campus speech by former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, a vocal opponent of illegal immigration.
It also said Tancredo's stance on illegal immigration "directly contrasts" with Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, a member of the college's Board of Trustees.

Tancredo....lately he’s out there alone with the wolves. He deserves the greatest support from all who opposed illegal immigration/amnesty.
So! It IS possible to block a speech that is in opposition to the local Bishop. Are you listening Notre Dame? (Obammy) St. Joseph’s? (Chrissie Matthews) Xavier (Donna Brazile)?
Has this bastion of higher learning ever heard of the First Amendment?

You certainly can't argue with THAT point.
You do know, of course, that the First Amendment only applies to the Federal Government?
That your First Amendment rights are not abridged if, for example, I refuse to let you deliver a speech in my front yard?
Have you ever heard that the First Amendment only applies to the government, and not to private entities like Providence College.
I'm afraid more bishops care about the rights of illegal aliens than are willing to do more than give lip service to the pro-life cause. Otherwise the list of bishops denouncing the University of Notre Dame would be much longer.
More and more, it seems like Catholic colleges are Catholic in name only. For headlines and money, they seem more than willing to embrace any doctrine at all. That, in itself, is unimportant. What is important is that parents preparing to send their children off to college know and understand the fraud of Catholic colleges. Rather than spend a veritable fortune for a school like Boston College or Notre Dame in the mistaken belief that standards of faith will be upheld, those parents might be well advised to consider other financially reasonable colleges and universities where matters of religious faith still remain in the hands of students and parents and are not a part of the school’s agenda.
Where’s the encyclical? Otherwise it’s just an opinion.
More to the point, Catholic colleges are LIBERAL colleges. Notre Dame is only 50 miles from me, and the only thing that surprised me about the flap re:Obama, was that so many people didn’t know how liberal ND is....

Jesus said we should take in the stranger, but not to coddle someone who has committed a crime, even if it is a border violation of law. It is not a controversial law and every nation has such a law.
Illegal immigration does not have the same status as abortion. There is no wiggle room on abortion. It is the highest level of sin. Those advocting it are the highest level of sinners.
Maybe so, but the Bishop’s position is NOT Church doctrine. The matter of abortion is. This Bishop and the school are conspiring to cut off free speech simply because they hold a different position on illegal immigration. Tancredo will not be silenced.
I am somewhat surprised because Providence College is relatively conservative compared to other Catholic Colleges. The Army ROTC maintians a popular presence on campus, and last year’s commencement speaker was Major Michael Manning ‘97(http://media.www.thecowl.com/media/storage/paper493/news/2008/04/03/News/Commencement.Speaker.Announced-3302208.shtml)
I am only “somewhat” surprised because Providence College was founded as a working class college for immigrants and first generation college students, and the City of Providence itself has a long history as a city of immigrants, both legal and illegal.
