Napolitano: Border With Mexico to Stay Open for Now
Washington Post ^ | April 28, 2009 | Spencer S. Hsu

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano rejected calls to close the U.S.-Mexico border in response to the swine flu outbreak, saying the costs to both countries at this point outweigh the medical benefits.

"That's something that always can be considered," Napolitano told NBC's "Today" show Tuesday, before adding that the virus has already spread to several states across the United States.

"You have to look at what the costs of that are. We literally have thousands of trucks and lots of commerce that cross that border. We have food products and other things that have to go across that border. So that would be a very, very heavy cost for -- as the epidemiologists tell us -- [what] would be marginal, if any, utility in terms of actually preventing the spread of the virus," Napolitano said.

Napolitano made similar comments in a half-dozen televised appearances, appearing to seek to tamp down potential controversy.

"You have to look at what the costs of that are."

Closing legal entry points won’t even slow down the illegals and who is most likely to be bringing their diseases into the U.S. for free medical treatment?

Build the damn wall now.

....who is most likely to be bringing their diseases into the U.S. for free medical treatment?

It's NOT taxpaying American citizens! Some of us with pre-existing medical conditions get quotes for high deductible medical insurance of amounts over $1,000-$1,500 a month (which is jaw-dropping unaffordable) - while illegals get treatment (up to and including organ transplants) for free.....

Very good. We'll know who to blame when American citizens start dying by the 100s.

I agree with her that the cat is out of the bag; it’s too late.

That said, I will still blame her.

If this thing gets big—how many American Deaths will need to be suffered before the border is closed? 10,000? 20,000, 50,000, 100,000 or a Million? If I was a Mexican—and I was feeling sick—I would be rushing to the border ASAP to take advantage of US health care and not trusting to what they have in Mexico. Maybe this is God’s Punishment for the drug wars?

From my vantage point here in Phoenix the border is WIDE open (and has been effectively so for many years).

Why, it's so wide open you could be filmed at night hiking right across it, and BP wouldn't do a d*mn thing about it. Thanks for the tip.

What a clueless BITCH. That's going to be comforting to any families that bury relatives from this thing.

As the flu goes through Mexico, it hasn't stopped the war going on there.
Wow! Thanks AuntB, that looks like a good idea for a continuously updated 'blog topic.
