Vice president Joe Biden said today he would tell his family members not to use subways in the U.S. and implied schools should be shuttered as the swine flu outbreak spread to 11 states and forced school closures amid confirmation of the first U.S. death.
Biden made his comments during a brief interview on NBC's "Today" show during an interview with Matt Lauer.
"I would tell members of my family, and I have, I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now. It's not that it's going to Mexico, it's you're in a confined aircraft when one person sneezes it goes all the way through the aircraft. That's me. I would not be, at this point, if they had another way of transportation suggesting they ride the subway. "

Okay, Joe. So I guess all those “working stiffs” who don’t drive to work in New York should walk or stay home. And if anyone in your home town works in Washington and rides the train like you supposedly did, they should not go to work.

He also says we shouldn’t use anyone else’s plugs or at least make sure they’ve been disinfected before they’re installed.

I hate to agree with a blind pig that occasionally finds an acorn, but if we do have a true epidemic (or pandemic) developing, public transportation is a major fomite (contaminated inanimate object) for spreading the pathogen. Public transportation, especially subways, is also a major target for a biological attack. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying the epidemic is imminent, but it is possible.
Biden is part of the very poor leadership we have in the White House.
Well, let’s see Joe. I could drive to work. It’s a 23 mile drive, so that’s 46 miles roundtrip. That works out to about an extra 11,000 miles of driving a year. My chance of dying in an accident on this commute in a given year is about 1 in 7,000, as there’s 1 fatality for every 70 million miles driven.
it would also cost me about $5,000 in gas, maintenance, and parking costs and take at least three extra hours out of my day. In addition, my commutinging would put an extra 5 1/2 tons of CO2 in the atmosphere per year.
What exactly is my marginally increased chance of catching a fatal flu infection in a subway, given that I’m 42 and very healthy? Liberals have an amazing ability to misunderstand cost and risk.
If the Swine flu is so Contagious, why don’t we close the boarders? Why quarantee people in the USA, when the Mexican boarder is open?
