Gingrich: 'Press Corps Has Taken Such a Pathetic Dive' with Obama By Brent Baker Created 2009-05-02 11:01

Reacting to the questions posed during Wednesday's presidential news conference, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich expressed disappointment with the White House press corps, telling FNC's Greta Van Susteren the journalists have “taken such a pathetic dive with this President that they ought to be part of his PR firm. I mean it's embarrassing to watch.”

Gingrich cited a series of subjects on which reporters failed to press Obama, such as “So why are you releasing these terrorists in the United States?” and “Why are you so confused about whether or not you want to in fact go after and prosecute people who've never historically been prosecuted before?” Plus, “Doesn't it worry you to have $9 trillion in debt being projected under your administration?”

In the interview conducted at Mount Vernon, Gingrich quipped: “If you didn't know better, you'd think that he was practicing with his own public affairs people for the future press conference.”

Audio: MP3 clip [1] which matches the video (58 secs)

From an interview excerpt run at the end of the Friday, May 1 On the Record with Greta Van Susteren [2]:

I think the Washington White House press corps has taken such a pathetic dive with this President that they ought to be part of his PR firm. I mean it's embarrassing to watch. How many reporters have said to him, you know, “so why are you releasing these terrorists in the United States?” How many reporters have said to him, you know, “why are you so confused about whether or not you want to in fact go after and prosecute people who've never historically been prosecuted before?” Why are so few of them saying to him: “Gosh, doesn't it worry you to have $9 trillion in debt being projected under your administration?”

I mean, there is no tough, serious engagement. It's like watching a collection of, you know -- if you didn't know better, you'd think that he was practicing with his own public affairs people for the future press conference. These look like practice sessions. They don't look like real press conferences.

The MSM, the drive by media in our country have become a luaghingstock, a huge joke but nobody is laughing anymore. Liberal newspapers and liberal magazines and liberal television networks are going bankrupt by the dozens and I have absolutely no sympathy for them whatsoever. I hope and wish they all die a quick but particularly painful agonizing death.

Hey, Newt. These are his own public affairs people!

If they had “tough, serious engagement”, they would not be allowed into the Press Corp or never be called on again. It’s all controlled and phony.

>>What real differences existed between Bush and Obama?

Bush was not an anti-American Marxist. Bush did what it took to keep us safe after 9/11.

I agree both that parties keep expanding government and stripping us of our Constitutional rights, but I think there is a substantial difference between Bush and Obama.

Pay, that’s the key, and the abscense thereof. The current fifth column is media whoredom, sluteredia ... disease ridden drek.

Bravo to your post, I've been thinking the same thing for a while now.

Ya can't fight the enemy if you won't identify who and what they are.

Our side is just so weak, at least those who are our supposed leaders. So afraid of criticism, so afraid of not being liked, so afraid of standing up for concepts and positions that have ALL THE HISTORICAL EVIDENCE ON THEIR SIDE. It’s almost like we need one really tough individual to stand up and make a huge scene, and then not back down. Perhaps that will embolden the others. If not, well, we organize and get it done ourselves.

These days, at times, it is like living in Bizzaro World for a child of the 70s & 80s. Who would’ve thought you sometimes would find more truth in Pravda, than US papers — well those U.S. that haven’t ALREADY failed as a result of lack of quality, bias and loss of relevance that is...

I’ve got a secret for the newspapers that’s better than a government bailout... Hiring credible journalists and not party hacks who know how to write an honest news article without injecting editorial.

Hell, the guttiest conservative I’ve seen in the past 6 months has been Miss California. What a joke our side is, bunch of wuss-asses.

It honestly as if there are no more Statesmen in Washington save for (hopefully) a very few whose voices are too shaky at present to speak up... You’re right the public has to do their part. I pray some good Statesmen/Stateswoman ;) can find the courage to step forward.

...they ought to be part of his PR firm.

Isn't the problem that they are part of his PR firm? Isn't that what the Begala/Podesta/Carville/Emanuel-arranged dinners with 'journ-o-lists' is all about?

When It took the National Enquirer to break the John Edwards baby story that the MSM chose to ignore, I eliminated all last purchases of newspapers and weekly magazines.

God bless the internet.

Good for Newt. Ridicule is the most powerful weapon our side has at the moment. We should use it often.

>>>>> They studied journalism so that someday they could effect “change”. <<<<<<<

This is absolutely correct and I have heard some whacky opinions from practicing journos about their own alleged powers of “objectivity” coupled with their bizarre (and conflicting) conviction that they know which “change” is best for everyone else.

H.L. Mencken properly understood his own role as both a journo and aesthete, and never took himself (or anyone else) very seriously.

He’d guffaw and snicker at today’s solipsistic “graduate students of journalism.”

I'm afraid you are right, question is how will it be accomplished.

The intimidation and ridicule from the left is quite effective and is in full power mode and they have mastered it's use and effectiveness, not to mention the willing media.

The recent attacks on Miss California should wake up a lot of people to their tactics (fingers crossed), she has a lot of courage to stand up the way she has. I personally hope she tells the pageant to stuff their crown after their threats against her. I don't mean to go off topic, but she has more guts to stand up then our "representatives' apparently do.

I have no idea how this will ultimately pan out but whatever it is, I don't think it's going to be pretty :(

And it is very definitely NOT what we are getting from proto-RINO Eric Cantor and his co-bipartisan accomplice Juan McQueeg.

Rep. Eric Cantor is on the fast track to being called “Eric Can’t” by his disappointed Virginia constituents.
