President Obama will seek to extend the controversial D.C. school voucher program until all 1,716 participants have graduated from high school, although no new students will be accepted, according to an administration official who has reviewed budget details scheduled for release tomorrow.
The budget documents, which expand on the fiscal 2010 blueprint that Congress approved last month by outlining Obama's priorities in detail, would provide $12.2 million for the Opportunity Scholarship Program for the 2009-2010 school year. The new language also would revise current law that makes further funding for existing students contingent on Congress's reauthorization of the program beyond its current June 2010 expiration date. Under the Obama proposal, further congressional action would not be necessary, and current students would automatically receive grants until they finish school.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan had told reporters that it didn't make sense "to take kids out of a school where they're happy and safe and satisfied and learning," but Democrats effectively terminated the program by requiring its reauthorization. Obama must now convince Democratic lawmakers to endorse a gradual phase out by continuing to include grant funding in future appropriation bills.

All he’s done is keep the program going until all the students have graduated, which is great. Then the program will be discontinued completely.
Imagine having one kid in the voucher program but having to put your younger ones in the DC Public School System. This would be a great research project, comparing the siblings that were grandfathered in and their younger siblings. I think I already know the results of this study.
Vouchers are very effective. This is what really galls the Rats because the teacher unions don’t care a rats ass about really educating the children. They just care about power, control and federal $$$ (our tax dollars). Public school money has never been spent well for the purpose of educating our children. Vouchers permit these same children to receive a good education and sadly needed discipline and moral values education. And, because the majority of these voucher children in DC are black, Obama is concerned now about the dissatisfaction coming from blacks about canceling this voucher program and putting these kids back in their old unsafe school environment. So he is doing the right thing now for the wrong reason as it is still all about him and his personal popularity.
ONLY UNTIL THE CURRENT STUDENTS GRADUATE!......THEN, BACK TO THE LOUSY PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN DC......................

Another chance for him to come in with his measured ‘Solomon act’. He’s still killing a good program, but he looks less radical than those rabid Democrats in Congress.

Sure it does. Democrats need votes and money from radical socialist teacher unions. They don't give a wit about the students who benefit from the vouchers.
The next step should be to parade the younger siblings of program participants, showing how the little brother or sister is getting shafted.

I fear his coalition of racial politics, illegals, union members, wealth transfer recipients, and vote fraud keeps him in office Chavez style.
I know. Most of us here knew what obama would do last year. We were informed and we researched. When I spoke to many of my friends and acquaintancesthey said NO WAY can he do those things. This is why we have two party system and the house.
Now they say, I don’t know what I was thinking.
We can’t give up. If I did not have children I would not worry so much. But I can’t leave this world to my children in communism and no hope unless they serve obama’s thugs.
