In US, Battle of Blondes to Revive Republicans
Times of India ^ | 23 May 2009 | Sarah Baxter

Posted on 05/23/2009 1:22:10 PM PDT by nickcarraway

The new torchbearers for the Republican party are two blondes with famous surnames — Cheney and McCain — and competing visions about how to revive American conservatism in the age of Barack Obama.

Liz Cheney, 42, the eldest daughter of former vice-president Dick Cheney, is contemplating a political career of her own now that her father’s White House years are over. “It’s an honourable profession and it’s something I may want to do, if I can persuade my five children to be my campaign staff,” she said in an interview.

Cheney, whose youngest child is only two, vigorously disputes the notion that the Republicans are as rudderless and stuck in the past as British conservatives were after the fall of Margaret Thatcher.

“We’re really in a pre-Thatcher moment,” she said. “If you look at what the Obama administration is doing economically, we may get to a point where we have the American equivalent of British socialism in the 1970s.

“The Obama administration is moving so far left on economic issues, there may be some very direct parallels between the circumstances which allowed Margaret Thatcher to come to power and put Britain on the track to have a successful economy.”

Cheney scored a notable victory last week when she dived into the controversy about whether the White House should release photographs of prisoner abuse by American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was becoming “fashionable” to “side with the terrorists”, she said with steely clarity. The swipe was every bit as deadly as her father’s claim that Obama’s policies were making America less safe.

In the opposite corner is Meghan McCain, 24, the feisty, politically moderate blogger and daughter of John McCain, the former Republican presidential candidate. She told Dick Cheney brusquely: “You’ve had your eight years — go away.”

While Meghan is fast becoming a media celebrity for her outspoken views supporting of gay marriage and stem-cell research, she is short of admirers among the party faithful. Her own father admitted as much when asked whether she was a “future maverick in training”. “Maybe, maybe,” McCain laughed.

If it wasn't for the mainstream media constantly shoving shoving Cindy McCain in our face, no one would even know she exists except for a small cadre of people inside the Republican Party. Her "accomplishments" are utterly inconsequential; to borrow a much overused and obnoxious term from the 2000 election, she has no "gravitas." I've been a Republican longer than this chickie has been alive; I wouldn't take her advice on when to cross the street, let alone the direction of something as monumental as the future of the Republican Party.

She's a centrist, just like her father, and look where the mushy middle got us in 2008. McCain supporters in 2008 where far from enthusiastic...I, and thousands of others like me, held our noses all the way to the polls. Only the liberal media would suggest that die-hard Republicans or rock-solid conservatives are clamoring for more of the same, which is exactly why they are pushing her like a marketing company pushes it's latest product.

We're not buying.

I can’t believe people are even comparing the two. It would be nice to see their resumes side by side (snicker).

The only reason for a comparison would be to devalue Liz Cheney.

I guess I must be far FAR Right then.

If you don't support Obama 100% you are a right wing terrorist.

If you support Obama you are a man causing a disaster. ; )

You are NOT far right.

The measuring scale is "off scale" to the left.

There’s another thread that’s putting Meghan on the same page as Bristol. No doubt this is the Left’s next operation, trying to start feuds among Republican families.

Thanks for posting this! This helps me and others to understand what is going on. I can’t hear well and miss out so much on what is going on tv (people who caption Fox News aren’t all accurate or keeping up with what is said). I get so frustrated.

Here's my take. Ann Coulter does a total injustice to conservatism and undermines her own credibility whenever she publicly supports Romney. That also goes for the other so-called conservatives --- AKA. "sellouts", AKA. "yahoos" --- who find it necessary to back such a phony and fraud.

Get your head out of your butt, Ann and stick to hammering liberals. Which should include Willard the Myth.

I do remember that Liz Cheney was an advisor to Fred Thompson’s campaign, though! I didn’t know she went over to Mit Romney’s camp after.

I wonder how many people Megan McCain could attract to a speaking event. I mean supporters, not left wing media people or SEIU members.
