Sotomayor Would Be First Justice With Type 1 Diabetes
Associated Press ^ | May 27, 2009 | Karen Kaplan

(AP) — BETHESDA, Md. -- If confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor would not only be the first Hispanic woman to sit on the court. She would also be its first member with Type 1 diabetes. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in New York says the disease shaves an average of seven to 10 years off a person's life, but experts said Wednesday that diabetics who manage their disease well can expect to live as long -- and work as hard -- as healthy Americans.

"There's absolutely no reason whatsoever that she should be less effective at all," said Dr. Peter Butler, chief of endocrinology at the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center. "I'm confident she'll see off most of the other members of the Supreme Court."

Type 1 diabetes affects an estimated 3 million Americans, who typically are diagnosed during childhood.

One would think that the most important issue with regard to her nomination is her judicial philosophy, not her diabetes.

So are they finally admitting that she isn’t the first hispanic without mentioning that? I think the left is obcessed with “firsts”?

So what’s the next “first” for the Supreme Court? A dwarf Asian hypoglycemic hermaphrodite?

I am a Type 1 diabetic and the diabetic blogs are going ga ga over SOTOMAYOR.
Like most medical oriented blogs, they have been taken over by liberals. At one point they are mad that her diabetes should be of concern to her ability to serve, and the other point is that she will cure their disease through elevation of embryonic stem cell research as a priority for funding.

Personally, I'm more interested if a prospective justice suffers from Priapism (erection lasting more than 4 hours). Hard to determine with a female candidate, I will admit ... nonetheless... Inquiring minds need to know.

She’ll also be the first openly bigoted, racist “justice” to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. That’s pretty “historical” in itself. I guess it shows how far America has regressed under Barack the Kenyan’s regime.

Racist bigot Sonia Sotomayor should be locked in jail, for life. Republicans are watching, waiting to see who's got guts enough to deserve our vote.

Dump that turkey.

I think we need the first redneck supreme court justice, then the first one with a .50 BMG collection and an adequate reloading bench.

I could go on and on.

I can at least understand politically why this would matter more than being a hispanic woman. GWB did well in appointing relatively young justices. If you are looking to have an effect on the court a judge with longevity is a concern.

All the same I’m tired of hearing about all this. Where are the articles summarizing her published work. Her background only matters insofar as it informs her published stances on issues. We don’t have to know about the background if we are provided with her published work.

You have my sympathies. Diabetes is a horrible disease. Still, it is NOT the basis for determining a supreme justice. Personally, if upholding the Constitution were the only criteria for a supreme justice, we wouldn't have had that awful Kelo vs New London decision several years back. That was the day our liberty died as 7/9 justices at the time of that decision were appointed by Republicans.

Its all down hill from that decision. Nothing can bring back that lost freedom.

Karen Kaplan...WE DON’T CARE.

We’re far more concerned with the flaming racist attitudes this woman could bring to bear on the USSC, not to mention her poor judgment when it comes to the law.
