WASHINGTON President Barack Obama on Friday personally sought to deflect criticism of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, who finds herself under intensifying scrutiny for saying in 2001 that a female Hispanic judge would often reach a better decision than a white male judge. "I'm sure she would have restated it," Obama flatly told NBC News, without indicating how he knew that.
The quote in question from Sotomayor has emerged as a rallying call for conservative critics who fear she will offer opinions from the bench based less on the rule of law and more on her life experience, ethnicity and gender. That issue is likely to play a central role in her Senate confirmation process.
Obama also defended his nominee, saying her message was on target even if her exact wording was not.
"I think that when she's appearing before the Senate committee, in her confirmation process, I think all this nonsense that is being spewed out will be revealed for what it is," Obama said in the broadcast interview, clearly aware of how ethnicity and gender issues are taking hold in the debate.
The president's damage control underscored how the White House is eager to stay on message as the battle to publicly define Sotomayor picks up.

We aren’t going to win this on conservative issues such as racism. (Yes, the left is now on the side of racism, and the right is on the side of anti-racism, but you Freepers know that, right?) However, there may be an avenue of attack that might derail this nominee: Turns out she may lean pro-life. Not real pro-life, but more pro-life than the demo socialists would want to go. If we can verify and then pound on that point, the LEFT will take down her nomination.
Doesn’t take too much mind reading to know someone who wants a job would change what they said if it inflames the people doing the hiring.
All Liberal Socialists fear is exposure.
Just the opposite. Those likely to push her through would agree with her.
A judicial nominee who thinks they’ll make better decisions because of the color of their skin and their sex. My haven’t we made a lot of progress.
I think it should be further pointed out that her phrasing was EXTREMELY DELIBERATE, because she was responding to something said previously by a conservative justice, who said that it doesn’t matter if a judge is a wise man or a wise woman, or something to that effect.
If anyone knows who said that, or exactly what he said that she was stepping in to correct, I think it would be very much worth while putting it forward into the conversation.
Because it indicates that she didn’t just say it carelessly. She said it deliberately. And it was INTENDED to contradict a statement that the sex of a judge doesn’t matter, only the wisdom.
So, there was nothing careless or accidental about it. Except that maybe she now regrets having said it publicly before she gets on the court for life, and can safely say and do whatever the hell she wants.
Obama, having spent 20 years steeped in Black Liberation Theology, gives a pass to all racism directed against white AmeriKKKans ...
Obama and her most likely want to expend as little political capital as possible on this. The more this blows up the less he has to try to push for an equally or more radical candidate in the future. And he will probably get at least two more nominees in this term. The left side of the court will make sure it is refreshed before a potential republican is back in office.
Bull!
She hasn’t done so yet and has no intention of doing it.
She’s a RACIST just like Obama - hates WHITES.
Yeah, and I wish I could “re-state” some of the things I’ve said in my life too.
You’ve been pandered to for so long, Barack, that you have a distorted view on reality
Amazingly accurate, but unintended , Obama comment...on what she said.
Huh. So we’ve heard Gibbs propounding on what she would say and now his boss 0bama pontificating on what she would say...uh, has anyone in the MSM thought to ask the nominee what she does say? Or are they too busy gushing over what a hunk 0bama was in high school?
Just the way Rev. Wright restated his hatemongering comments?
Or William Ayers and his America hating comments.
And Im sure if my aunt had balls, she would be my uncle...
