Gubernatorial candidate, joining the senator, explains need for outreach at Tustin town hall event.
BY MARTIN WISCKOL
TUSTIN - Sen. John McCain endorsed Meg Whitman at a joint town hall meeting Friday, saying the gubernatorial candidate was needed both in Sacramento and in the struggling Republican Party.
"The woman standing beside me represents all of the qualities that will attract people to our party," McCain told a crowd of about 500 supporters at Tustin's Marconi Auto Museum. "We will not only tolerate, but accept people whose views are different than our own."
Whitman, former CEO of eBay, has an early lead in the race for the GOP nomination for governor, leading Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell in the election to be held next year. Her campaign focuses on job creation, state spending cuts, and education reform.
McCain, who had encouraged Whitman to run for the state's top job, applauded her business innovations and said she had the skills to address the state's increasingly dire budget deficit.
While McCain and Whitman both called on the GOP to reach out to a broader constituency, a controversial aspect of that diversity arose when Whitman was asked about her position on abortion - a position that has made many social conservatives wary of her election bid.
"I'm pro-choice," Whitman said, receiving applause for a significant portion if not the majority of the audience. "It's not that I want more abortions. But I don't want to take that choice away from women and their doctors."

This is sickening. The GOP is truly dead & needs to be buried before it stinks any worse. Never thought I would witness this during my lifetime.

She did a pretty bad job at EBay, which qualifies her for the GOP as it did for Carly.
