Penn. Paper Didn't Know Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and JFK Were Assassinated?

This little report is interesting in a few ways, but the most important is that it seems to show that the editors of at least one American newspaper are wholly ignorant of American history. It seems that early last week the Warren Times Observer of Warren, Pennsylvania published an ad that basically expressed a desire to see President Barack Obama assassinated and they didn't even know it.

The small town paper published an ad that read as follows: "May Obama follow in the steps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy!" Sadly, the paper's editors completely missed the salient fact that all these historical presidents -- except for Obama -- were assassinated in office!

By Friday, the paper printed an apology and told the AP that it had turned over all relevant info to the Secret Service.

Why assume whoever wrote this thought he was talking about assassination? Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy were all great men. Maybe the writer was putting Obama in their league?

From the article:

"This incident does not speak well for the historical education of the folks that run the Warren Times Observer, for sure. Unfortunately, this historical ignorance raises the suspicion that the entire newspaper industry suffers from the same fate... it is a damning commentary on the end product of our schools if even the employees of a newspaper — an entity that is supposed to be one of the informers of the nation — are so ignorant of history..."

And this is not even to mention the sad fact that an American would wish for the assassination of a president enough to place such an ad in the first place!

I wonder if the author of this article thinkns that the ad-placer is the only one?

IIRC,

While Garfield had the assassins bullet in his back, it can be argued that the digging around for the bullet and sebsequesnt infection killed him.

Alexander Graham Bell was called in to see if his "metal detector" could locate the bullet. He got hits and the doctors started digging, unsuccessfully.

After a few attenmpts they stopped. Later, is was believed that the detector was hitting on the metal bed springs and not the bullet.

I work in the print media, and I’ve seen first-hand
the shocking lack of a good, basic education among young newsroom staffers. Of course this is true of the entire country.... And the staff of the advertising departments is, if anything, worse than the reporters and editors -— but without the monstrous self-regard of the “journalists.”

Shrug. The same media wished overtly for the same thing to happen to Bush and nothing came of it.

No one can possibly REALLY think that to be what would be even an option for history. The left may think that but they are not possibly that devoid of a soul.

We can only pray it could not be a realistic possibility for ANY person particularly a President.

Newspapers nowadays are full of twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings who went to school after they changed curricula and don’t emphasize history as they once did. And, people in the news business tend to be a self-selected group of liberals, who got into the journalism business to “make a difference”, “to change society”, to “inform and encourage support for causes”, etc. etc.

But they also just don’t know their history. All they know of World War 2 is that it’s ancient history, and that we were evil because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. All they know of the Civil War is that we were evil because of slavery. All they know of American history is that the Founding Father’s can’t be called that. They have to be called the “Framers” of the constitution because it offends feminism, even though all of the “Framers” were men, we can’t call them “Founding Fathers”. And we were evil because when Jefferson wrote “All men are created equal”, he literally meant men, not women.

And this attitude is reinforced every time Obama tells us that we have not lived up to our highest ideals in some way or other.

“So many jokes, so little time, so many SS agents... ;)”

Hasn’t the Obama administration, in defending Sonia Sotomayor, established an ironclad principle that anyone who “mispeaks” should be given a pass? I’m sure this is all a big misunderstanding.

Many were recently promoting the image that Obama is another Kennedy and Lincoln, if I recall correctly.

If they were such historic iggernomouses why were they so attracted to Garfield and McKinley? Didn’t McKinley preside over the Spanish-American War and annexations? Wasn’t he denounced as an imperialist warmonger in his own time?

the editors of at least one American newspaper are wholly ignorant of American history.

The author has no clue about how newspapers work. The newsroom editors have nothing to to with the Advertising department.

Classified ads are verified against a "forbidden word" dictionary, but there was nothing in this classified ad that would have been flagged by that dictionary.

Classified ad takers ("sales reps") are usually low-level employees who just take dictation from transient walk-in/phone customers. I wouldn't expect them to catch the historical references.

Is anyone responsible at the newspaper for reviewing classified ads? Most likely the Classified Supervisor will take the blame.
