Adesperate and ridiculous claim that Sonia Sotomayor would not be the first Hispanic justice to take the U.S. Supreme Court bench is very revealing. There are actually people claiming with a straight face that Benjamin Cardozo, appointed to the court by Herbert Hoover in 1932, was the first Hispanic justice.

BTW: Google *Cardozo* as notice it is Spanish in origin.
Here we go again Ping!
But dammit, I am going to write an entire column arguing about it.
The La Raza and “Hispanic” activists do not care for the Castillan or “white” Spanish speakers.
Without Identity Politics the Democraps would have no politics at all.
I guess the writer thinks Cardozo didn’t “look Hispanic.” Interesting. The snarky racism/ethicism of the left is not a pretty thing to witness.
so Cadozo was hispanic.
but he is the wrong hispanic for the racists.
isn’t this why they adopted the “Latino” designation? People miss the fact that “latino” was often used as derrogatory for illegal alien in the USA.
Hispanic just meant descended from native spanish speakers.
So why else would racists who support Sotomayer hate Cardozo?
The Democrats are the biggest RACISTS and want to keep their "PLANTATION" going!
Sonia Sotomayor went to private grade school, high school, college and law school, all in the normal sequence.
Personally, I’d called her a pampered American girl.
Wouldn’t that make Obama the wrong black for blacks? Since he is half white and we are not sure about the black; maybe Arab?
“The U.S. Department of Transportation defines Hispanic to include, “persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central or South American, or others Spanish or Portuguese culture or origin, regardless of race.”[15] This definition has been adopted by the Small Business Administration as well as many federal, state, and municipal agencies for the purposes of awarding government contracts to minority owned businesses. Still, other government agencies adopt definitions that exclude people from Spain. Some others include people from Brazil, but not Spain or Portugal.”
Wiki: Hispanic
Used as a convinient term during the quest from Fed dollars.
Why not use the federal government's definition, junior? "The [federal] OMB defines Hispanic or Latino as 'a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race,' " and that determination is "based on self-identification." It is NOT limited to "people descended from the countries that were once ruled by Spain in the New World."
Typical media bull crap...
WTH is Hispanic? Ping
"... There is a long story there, but suffice it to say you can call me an American or Mexican American or Tejano... You could call me Latino if you're still looking for a handle."
We could call you 'Arnold', which is about the most Hispanic name I can think of.
If Benjamin Cardozo doesn't get to be regarded as Hispanic, then neither does Martin Sheen (Emelio Estevez) or Desi Arnaz or newspaper editors named Arnold Garcia Jr.
Cardoza was Portugese - they do not speak Spanish.
“Sonia Sotomayor went to private grade school, high school, college and law school, all in the normal sequence.
Personally, Id called her a pampered American girl.”
ding ding ding!
It is her mother who has a “compelling life story”!
I doubt Ben ever gave it much thought though nor, I'll bet, did he ever let it influence his judgment.
I guess he just wasn't Hispanic enough for today's identity whores.
“Wouldnt that make Obama the wrong black for blacks?”
....here’s a black preacher that questions Obama’s blackness:

No. He's a far-left-wing socialist. He's perfect. Clarence Thomas is the wrong black for blacks. So are Thomas Sowell, Larry Elder and anyone else who believes in The Constitution and the primacy of the individual over the group.
