Top 10 Cities for New Grads
As Class of 2009 feels pinch, job searches expand
By Kate Lorenz, CareerBuilder.com editor
Nate Torvik has mixed feelings about his upcoming graduation from Purdue University. While there's relief that classes are over, exams have been taken and term papers turned in, what lies ahead is an extremely challenging and competitive job market.
"I feel like the wind has been taken out of my sails," says Torvik, who received a bachelor's degree in mass communication. "There is so much pride and happiness that comes with graduation, but as soon as I step off that stage at graduation, I become another statistic of the current miserable economy."
Torvik is one of thousands of soon-to-be college graduates thinking about relocating for work this spring. While choosing the best place to settle down can be a daunting decision, the current economic climate has raised the stakes.

Top 10 Cities for New Grads should be ranked by percentage of Federal Government jobs.
I pay $900 for a 3,000 s.f. house on an acre and a half, right next to a lake. Can't even hear traffic from here.
'course, I live in North Texas...
Majority of these pukes are stupid.I hope they play hell getting any job. That will wake them up or at least some of them.
We’re not saving for our kids’ college education. We’re providing them with a top quality primary education— and we’re providing well for our own retirement. But I’m assuming that college in its current form won’t exist when my kids are adults— interesting times.
Remember that that age group was raised by the 38 to 44 year olds ...
I live on 50 acres in the middle of no where. Its an hour drive one way to get groceries once a month. I dont have to see anyone unless I want to (except once a month :). I love it.
So, they’re idiots?
Been there, done that, but these days I've got to be a little closer to the big city to make a living for the family.
Still, we're far enough away from Dallas and the surrounding city mass that we're fairly secluded. It's a good balance.
I'm hoping that me and the wife can secure a piece of land like yours somewhere out here for retirement.
What???? I’m 39, hubby’s 42 and our oldest is in 1st grade.
I'm waiting for the Honeymoon to end, but it appears most people in this country have Battered Wife Syndrome.
Seriously, the average age to have a first baby is hovering around 25 (and rising), so if you’re 22 when graduating— you do the math— how does that add to 38? Seems like baseline 47.
Good luck, I hope you can find some land out in the country at a reasonable price. I firmly believe the reason things are so crazy in this country now days is people living squeezed together...no privacy....dealing with too many idiots too often.
Oh, Yeah. That is pricey for a one bedroom in C-Town. My brother has a nice 1 bedroom 22X12 living room 12X12 Kitchen 14X 12 bedroom and nice bath. Self contained small building in my neighborhood, centrl air well kept, and a garage space, $510 mo. $490 without garage.
Kids who succeed in school are likely to get good scholarships. Not a bad plan.
Sorry Nate, but there’s enough sh*tbirds in Journalism already. Yeah, it was a good 4 years of partying hard, what with your “Mass Communications” degree, but real life is tough. Welcome to it.
Bump for later reading.
