Pro-Western Bloc Defeats Hezbollah in Lebanon Vote By MICHAEL SLACKMAN

BEIRUT, Lebanon — An American-backed alliance appeared to retain control of the Lebanese Parliament on Sunday in a hotly contested election that had been billed as a showdown between Tehran and Washington for influence in the Middle East.

Preliminary results reported on Lebanese television, showed the alliance, known as the March 14 coalition, had managed to preserve its majority in Parliament. If those results are confirmed, they would represent a significant and unexpected defeat for Hezbollah and its allies, Iran and Syria. Most polls had showed a tight race, but one in which the Hezbollah-led group would win.

The tentative victory might have been aided by nearly unprecedented turnout. The preliminary results showed that about 55 percent of the 3.26 million registered voters cast ballots. Lebanese television reported that the March 14 coalition, a predominantly Sunni, Christian, Druze alliance, held at least 67 seats out of 128 in Parliament.

Though the Hezbollah-led challengers appeared to lose, Hezbollah itself — a Shiite political, social and military organization that is officially regarded by the United States and Israel as a terrorist group — will continue to be one of Lebanon’s most powerful political forces. The biggest disappointment might well have been the retired Gen. Michel Aoun, who appeared to preserve his bloc of seats but left the Christian constituency divided.

The interest in the contest was so high that during the day, people waited up to four hours to vote, many, including the elderly and the infirm, standing in the hot sun and in packed hallways.

Lebanon was once a very sophisticated and pro-Western country.

The Islamofascists have all but ruined it.

Read Brigitte Gabriel's “Because They Hate.”

Any move that weakens the Islamofascists anywhere is good news. But it is especially good news in Lebanon.

I know three Christian Lebanese families in the San Antonio area that fled Lebanon for a better life in the U.S. They are all pro-America and patriots to the core. They are also all business owners, have children in the military, and conservative.

Let's review.Iraq is on its way(after a very bumpy road I'll admit) to a form of democracy. Not perfect but workable. Lebanon is turning the tide away from radical Islamist to a more secular/centrist government. Europe is starting to vote more conservatively. What the hell is going on here at home?

The result of this election will mean that Syrian tanks will soon be rolling into Leb to “assist” the oppressed moslims against these zionists. Sorry, but election results that do not favor the moslims SHALL have a pro-moslim result, no matter what.

I bet Netanyahu is breathing a sigh of relief. He would had Hezbollah on one flank and Hamas on the other. Yeesh!!! Let's not forget Syria. Of course, our Pesident is busy addressing the Arab Muslims while snubbing Bibi.

And with the Iranian ayatollahs pulling the strings on Hassan Nasrallah and his fellow Hezzies from the sanctuary of Tehran, I’m sure Lebanon as an Iranian puppet state is their strategic goal and source of leverage against Washington, Jerusalem and even Damascus.
