Baltimore: It Really Is That Bad
the business insider ^ | 6/8/09

If anything, The Wire makes it seem better than it is.

We recently had the chance to visit Baltimore, Maryland to see a baseball game. And though the stadium is very nice, we came off thinking that in a sense the HBO show The Wire, actually makes Baltimore seem better than it really is. Because if you watched The Wire, you might conclude that all the messed up parts were confined to some section of the city, rather than the whole thing itself. But it's really all pretty miserable. We regret not putting it on our list of depressing cities.

Even downtown by day is pretty sad, given the prominence of once-glorious money manager Legg Mason (LM). And then at night it's just kind of miserable.

Anyway, we're not the only ones with no interest in The Charm City.

peHUB posts a copy of a letter to the editor from New Enterprise Ventures, a VC firm that's moving out of Baltimore. This part is particularly rich:

Our decision was a result of the high level of crime in our neighborhood. Over the last several years, many of our cars have been broken into resulting in very expensive repairs, our employees have been robbed at gun point, drug needles and used condoms have been left on our front stoop, and psychotic homeless people have menaced our employees and threatened to kill them. We have voiced our frustrations to the local community leaders and police, but the environment has only worsened. The recent local beatings by roving teenagers during the day in this neighborhood, the raucous club in the basement of the Belvedere, and other gang violence throughout the city reinforces the appropriateness of New Enterprise Associates’ decision to move in order to protect its employees.

Yeesh!

All joking aside, it really is tragic, since on the surface there's no reason the city needed to be that bad. It's got a beautiful spot on the water, in what should be a successful Eastern Seaboard state. And unlike Detroit, it wasn't married to a single industry that got absolutely gutted over the past several years. Why do we keep losing our cities? It's an embarrassment.

Schmoke was rather mild in comparison to the fools since. He didn’t stir up hatred, either.

4-1 half of those copters are MedEvac, not police. They have the same French copters.

50 years ago Baltimore was a great city; my mother lived there and as a 6yo took trollies alone into the city. What you’re probably talking about is the blue-collar and industrial areas (such as the “Inner Harbor”) that weren’t so pretty, but not dangerous.

“The hospital staff warns patients’ visitors to have an escort when leaving the premises.”

The escort is called Smith & Wesson, and a German Shepherd.

Fells Point is seedy because it was made the “party” (i.e., “endless drinking”) area for “collegiate” fools.

And right there, you just proved it wasn’t married to a single industry.

And it’s not; a major part is export/import of anything.

That’s ridiculous. It is perfectly fine from IH to the stadia.

BALTIMORONS.

Baltimore is a city in decline. It is no wonder why. Over ten years ago my wife couldn't walk downtown Fells point in daylight without getting harassed by the Baltimorons.

The cops they don't need you and man they expect the same.

And the voters of Maryland promoted the idiot O’Malley to do the same wonderful job he did in Baltimore for the entire state.

My husbands Coast Guard Cutter was there for repairs and I went up and spent a week or 2. Yes I did stay in the harbor area but for entertainment during the day, while he was working, I took city buses all over town. I never felt threatened when I got off and walked around but I remember that it looked old and seedy and I never found what looked like an upscale neighborhood. I know there had to be one somewhere.

Baltimordor is run by the democRat racist socialist corruption machine that also misrules the entire Peoples’ Republic of Maryland. Thing is, outside of the PG/MontCo/Baltimordor Axis of Evil, Marylanders are pretty much Red-Staters. This limits the damage the ‘Rats can inflict.

The welfare state destroyed Baltimore, with its break down of the family among African-Americas, who are the dominant ethnic group in Balitmore. This ‘protected class’ has been utterly destroyed by liberals (Oh, I forgot they’re now calling themselves progressives.) So, this is social progress. NOT.

You don't live anywhere near a high black population and don't know what you're talking about. The fact that blacks kill each other shows their propensity for violence culturally same as how they target whites and others that they view as targets...often justifiable targets given how their leaders tell them ad nauseum how it's our fault they are screwed up....(many of them, maybe most if you look at stats)

This is where Obama really screws the pooch, he has their ear...he could address their behavior, hatred of whites and illegitimacy but instead he just fuels it.

I live here amongst them. I deal with it. this ain't Portland down here. They let you know loud and clear they are after you because you are a cracker and they ain't happy about it. It ain't just crime of opportunity like the media would want you to believe.

How long will whites put up with that politically? Probably forever since there are so many like yourself who don't even think it's an issue since you don't live it and think blacks are all Cosby show.

the pitiful irony in all this is that when I was a boy 45 years ago and blacks really were treated poorly, they were much nicer and more responsible and just one on one courteousness was better between black and white. now, they have the world by the tail politically and they are more bitter than ever

tells you something about human nature

We allow it.

Yesterday I watched CNN at the gym. They covered two stories for 20 minutes each. The first was a white girl who was missing and presumed dead. The other was a white boy who was killed by a gang. Something struck me. We never hear about black kids in those situation. Surely gangs have beaten black teens to death in similar situations. Surely black girls have been abducted and killed.

We allow that behavior and we only take notice when it affects us.

It’s obvious black males kill each other over gang stuff. but I’m not sure about black children and stranger abductions.

You sure never hear about it...unless it family..that was what made Wayne Williams so unreal

White gang bangers killing one another is more rare and hence more sensational for news....I hate to say it but apparently newsfolks think abducted doe eyed kids ot blonde women make better victims for news ratings sadly

like it reflects their anchor choices too...not that I’m complaining aboput anchor choices these days of any color...wow...amazing..women on the news did not look like this when Iw as little...come to think of it there were none.

Goodnight Chet....and all that

The frequent cop-out when dealing with why so many big cities are horrible is to deny that race has anything to do with it. Instead, it's blamed on Democrats and liberals. Well, yeah, but these places are run by Democrats and liberals because they have huge black populations and blacks only vote for Democrats and liberals. Then we're told that it isn't race, it's illegitimacy, school drop-outs, street gangs, and so forth. But blacks have astronomical rates illegitimacy, school abandonment, gang membership, and so forth.

There are plenty of white liberal areas in America. I wouldn't care to live there because I don't relate very well to smug, know-it-all, unisex types who hang around Starbucks, sip expensive wines, look down on Christians, listen to NPR, and eat organic vegetables. You can find plenty of these people in upscale Boston suburbs or around Beverly Hills or all over Vermont. Those places elect liberal Democrats, too, but they aren't crawling with street gangs and violent crime, or filled to overflowing with welfare mamas with six kids.
