Do you want to avoid buying products made in certain countries?
Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China?
If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.
471 is Made in Taiwan.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products MADE IN CHINA, so they dont show from which country it is made.
However, you may now refer to the barcode.
Remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 MADE IN CHINA
00 - 09 USA & CANADA
30 - 37 FRANCE
40 - 44 GERMANY
47 Taiwan
49 JAPAN
50 UK
BUY USA by watching for 0″ at the beginning of the number.

Excellent techie info! I will def. watch for this!
People don’t look at the nutrician label. I can’t imagine people taking the time to fish around for a bar code. Although this is interesting information. I bet most of the food will be from China...lol.
Excellent!
Forwarding this link to all the C’s in my address book.
Thanks!
Question is does that mean the product was actually manufactured in the US or just packaged in the US?
Great info...Thanks!!
WOW! I was searching on a pkg at walmart yesterday in the dog stuff area to find out where a rawhide chew was made...could only locate that the product was ‘managed’ or something by walmart. I do not want to buy products for my dogs that are made in foreign countries that may use unsafe preservatives or dyes, etc. Now I know to look at the BAR CODE.....THANK YOU SO MUCH. Good info!
I suppose it could mean either, but at least you are provided with half the story, instead of shopping totally blind.
It’s only partially wrong. The barcode is established by country of origin, so while you may find a UK barcode starting with 50, it may have been made in China. Either way, I would suspect that many US products will be 00.
I just purchased a high-dollar appliance for my home, and the barcode started with 691 and said “Made In China” on the side. Sadly, I believe one would be hard-pressed finding any electronics “Made in USA.”
Interesting!
Are you sure this is right?
I’m looking at a book right now with the bar code 9 780805078046 51700
And on the frontis page it says “Printed in U.S.A.”
I’m also looking at a bottle of Sanford brand white out with the bar code 0 4154028400 0 and on the bottle it says “Made in Thailand”.
You had better check your facts.
Most outrageous. I purchase some picture frames with a tiny label attached that said Milano.
When I peeled that label off there it was.....CHINA.
They send us poisoned products, and they LIE.

My sister is remodeling her kitchen and told me that pretty much Bosch was the only one for appliances still in USA. I haven’t checked it out but will when we start building our new house . . . whenever that might be.
What is your source for this information?
The bar code represents the country of origin, not necessarily where it was manufactured. Just learned that. The site has been updated to reflect that.
GS1 Prefixes do not provide identification of country of origin for a given product. They simply provide number capacity to different countries for assignment from that location to companies who apply. Those companies in turn may manufacture products anywhere in the world.
I just picked up a package of batteries. Made in China 0457...
Here’s a Quick link for a chain. Made in China 0817...
And a pair of wire strippers. Made in China 0320...
so, you can’t tell squat from the barcode.
