An 88-year-old white supremacist coolly strode into the Holocaust Museum in Washington yesterday armed with a rifle and set off a wild shootout that killed a security guard.
James von Brunn, who runs a notorious Jew-smearing, Holocaust-denying Web site, was wounded in the attack he launched shortly before 1 p.m.
A survivor of the Nazi era was preparing to give a speech in the museum, crowded with tourists and schoolkids.
Dressed in a natty business suit, von Brunn only got steps into the building when he started firing off rounds from a .22-caliber rifle.
Alert guards didn't waste a second to return fire and hit von Brunn numerous times.
Von Brunn was carrying a list of Capitol Hill lawmakers when authorities grabbed him. The purpose of the list was not immediately known.
Guard Stephen Tyrone Johns, 39, was shot during the gun battle and later died.
"I ducked down to the ground and people were screaming," said Moti Shair, a Maryland contractor who was in the lobby. "When the bullets stopped, I lifted up my head and there was a guy with blood all over his face."
David Unrue, of Wichita, Kan., said, "People started yelling 'hit the floor, hit the floor,' " according to NECN.com. "Some of the museum staff starting yelling, 'Get up and run, get up and run.' "
Brunn and Johns were taken to George Washington University Hospital, where the attacker was in serious condition.
Johns was a six-year veteran of the museum security staff.
His son, Stephen Jr., told ABC News that his dad "was a loving father and he was my hero."

Too bad they didn't hit him enough and in the right places. The SOB is still alive.
A white racist goes into a public place and kills a black security guard. A black racist goes into a public place and kills a white man. The white racist is part of a small minority of racists here in the US, the black racist is part of a large group of radical Muslim racists here in the US. Which story will be reported ten to one?
