Newly chosen Democratic gubernatorial nominee R. Creigh Deeds leads his Republican opponent, former Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell, by six points in the first poll of Virginia voters released since Tuesday’s Democratic primary.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey taken Wednesday night finds Deeds with 47% of the vote and McDonnell with 41%. Two percent (2%) favor of some other candidate and 10% are undecided.
Forty-two percent (42%) say Deeds, a state senator from Bath County, is also more likely to win in November, while 34% give the edge to McDonnell.
Deeds scored a come-from-behind win in Tuesday’s primary, turning what looked several weeks ago like a third-place finish into a rout over Clinton confidant Terry McAuliffe and former state Delegate Brian J. Moran.
These figures on the general election represent a continuation of that comeback by Deeds. In April, Deeds made the weakest showing of the three Democratic candidates in match-ups against McDonnell, trailing him by 15 points, 45% to 30%. But now with one Democratic candidate only in the race, he has solidified support in his own party.

Eighty-nine percent (89%) of Virginia Democrats now favor Deeds over McDonnell while McDonnell has the support of 78% of Republicans. Among unaffiliated voters, McDonnell has a seven-point lead.
It is worth noting that, following Deeds’ victory, the number of undecided Democrats is significantly lower than the number of undecided Republicans and unaffiliated voters. It is too early to know if this reflects a temporary bounce following Deeds’ primary victory or if it signifies a more lasting change.

What?!!! It was just the other day that polls showed Mcdonnell beating any of the three candidates.
This is going to be a real horse race folks. (as opposed to our Jr. Senator Horseface).
Uh-oh ping? Way too early to be pushing panic buttons, but I am surprised that Deeds has a lead to start with, I figured it’d be basically even.
The fact that McConnell only has 78% Republican support seems significant, why is that? He seems like a very solid candidate (from what I can see from out of state).

It seems apparent that the stupidity of the American people will continue unabated in perpetuity. The people of Virginia deserve what they get... and like we’re getting with the current POSUS, it’s coming.
The sample selection process had been frontloaded to give Moran and McAuliffe a lead over Deeds, and more than likely to show McAuliffe in the lead over Moran.
It's a bit early to go back and poll using the same folks to call.
I'm sure they'll figure this out (not).

Primary victory bounce, he’s gotton very favorable press the last 2 - 3 weeks, look for both candidates to be back to even shortly. Frankly I’m surprised Deeds didn’t get a bigger bounce.
If this one was paid for by the Washington Post (Warren Buffett) then no one knows what it means, least of all the pollster.
A primary bump indeed. Remember the 10 point bump that comes out of national nominating conventions. The VA pubbies did not have near the press for their convention that Deeds had for the primary win. Check again in a couple weeks.

I suspect there are 2 factors in the 78%. The MSM is trying to portray Deeds as a moderate, when the truth is he got the Post endorsement because he’s the most to the left, and biggest tax hiker of the three. Deeds also claimed to be the “most progressive” in the race.
I would say the other factor is the negative press that the GOP got over the whole chairmanship mess.
BUT, this is early. No one’s really watching. This is just a signal that we can take nothing for granted.

The tide is still towards the Democrats, and will be for a while. McDonnell has a tough go ahead of him (as does most any GOP candidate, for a year or two).
No, people get what God has planned for them.
Taxes, jobs and the economy are the biggest issues in this race, and according to this poll those issues should favor McDonnell.
Oh no, Here Comes Mr. Deeds. This guy is probably the luckiest politican in Virginia history—with a name like Deeds!! At least he knocked off that idiot McCauliffe, what a swarmy snake.
