OK I may be the lone voice in the wilderness, but I thought his apology was heartfelt and classy. But you’re right, Dave, your joke was indefensible and you should pay a retribution for it. WHAT that should be, I have no idea. That’s why I am not a judge, I suppose.

You’re not alone.
And Freepers, before you all keep your shorts in a bunch over this, think - what is more important? Exacting revenge on the court jester or highlighting the crimes of the evil king?

OK I may be the lone voice in the wilderness, but I thought his apology was heartfelt and classy.Did he apologize to flight attendants for calling them slutty? And just because he thought that he was referring to Palin's 18 year old daughter, does that make her fair game for sexual jokes about being knocked up by Alex Rodriguez during a baseball game?
Letterman has yet to say he was a total jerk and that he went WAY over the line in his attempt to ridicule Sarah Palin by attacking her family. He is such an arrogant SOB that he will NEVER issue a real apology. NEVER.

The sponsors are getting restless.
Letterman was afraid not to apologize.

He was obviously struggling. He quoted one of his liberal icons, Mark Shields.
He beat around the bush for a while, but finally apologized and said he would do better.
It was obvious he had been taken to the woodshed. If Mark Shields and NOW weigh in against you, it isn't good.
His arrogance was gone. The Palins are gracious people. We should be too.

"OK I may be the lone voice in the wilderness, but I thought his apology was heartfelt and classy."
The text version of the "apology" that I saw included the quote below. I find very little class in Letterman saying "I'm sorry you are too dumb to get it." Not class -- just the same slimy condescension we expect from him.
"I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. Its not your fault that it was misunderstood, its my fault."

I guess we will all see it the way we want. I saw it as contrived. His body language says he did not want to say what he said. He was making excuses all over the place, and I got the feeling he is trying to save his career, more than he is accepting responsibility for a crude joke. He was clearly forced to make this apology, and he didn't like it. I don't watch his show and won't watch it in the future, but this apology is garbage. Not to mention the non-chalant way he ends it.
