Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., wants to legalize marijuana and has introduced legislation that would accomplish his goals.
"Criminalizing choices that adults make because we think they are unwise ones, when the choices involved have no negative effect on the rights of others, is not appropriate in a free society," he said in his new announcement about his plans for two bills.
One proposal would remove federal penalties for using marijuana and the second would let people in states where "medical marijuana" is allowed use it freely.
The cosponsors on the bills include Reps. Ron Paul, R-Texas and Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y.
"To those who say that the government should not be encouraging the smoking of marijuana, my response is that I completely agree," Frank's statement said. "But it is a great mistake to divide all human activity into two categories: those that are criminally prohibited, and those that are encouraged."

Good. The War on Drug Users has been a total disaster and any steps we can take towards ending it would be a good thing.
Barney should have been run out of D.C. because of his deception and profiteering from the Freddie/Fannie fiasco. Instead he seems to be emboldened to be a leader in new disasters.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that if they do legalize pot, the violent Mexican cartels who are kidnapping and murdering along the border will be totally screwed. 70% of their income comes from smuggling pot into the US. Too bad for them. They will have to get landscaping jobs.
Like I said in post #17, the pharmaceutical, petrochemical, & drug-testing industries are major players in keeping marijuana illegal these days. Back when it was criminalized in 1937, the fact that most pot users @ the time were black jazz musicians (have you ever watched the film "Reefer Madness"? If not, I suggest that you do so). The newspaper industry back in those days was run by Randolph Hurst, & he was probably one of the biggest contributors to that blight on American liberty as well.

W/ that line of thinking, it would make sense to criminalize tobacco. Personally, that wouldn't bother me on bit IF marijuana is going to remain illegal.
He never said that they haven't. The fact of the matter is the RESPONSIBLE marijuana use DOESN'T affect the rights of others. Driving under the influence of anything is irresponsible, & should remain against the law.

Hopefully Frank will make this his cause de existence. Just keep his hands off the economy.

Sorry, not buying it. People smoke dope to get high. It affects one’s judgment as well as boldness. To think that people, especially young ones, will act “responsibly” with a mind altering drug is naive. Make this stuff legal and that much more available and we’ll have more trouble than we know what to do with.
And yes, I’m speaking from experience. I also remember the days of 18 drinking age. There’s a reason why the alcohol rules had to be substantially tightened over the years. The same thing will happen, only much worse, if dope is legalized.
Hey Barn...don't you watch Weeds on Showtime? There are plenty of negative effects on people's rights. Like their right to LIFE! Making it legal will not get rid of gangs and illegal distribution.
