Generally speaking, I’m a believer in the rule that we should not speak ill of the dead. Or at least we should wait a decent interval before doing so (if we never spoke ill of the dead, history would be meaningless). But, I must say I find the media’s instinctive rush to sanctify Michael Jackson disgusting.
Look, I understand that Michael Jackson was an "icon." I understand that some people loved his work and that many people who never met him believed they loved the man too.
But I didn't, and I’m hardly alone. If Michael Jackson were just another famous person, I’d probably stay silent and let the pro forma celebration of his memory roll by without comment. (For instance, I have no problem whatsoever with the media taking a moment to pay respects to Farah Fawcett).

Based on my knowledge of him and his (I'm guessing here) musical output, I'd have to put MJ ahead of him (though not of the others).
But, as the other poster implied, my opinion isn't the only one out there and certainly not the most important-- and neither is yours.
He was a bit like Howard Hughes, albeit with more musical talent and less business sense in his salad days.

As evidenced by the bump up on iTunes and Amazon, lots of people seem to be interested in listening to Thriller. As far songs people “other than me” (I’m guessing I’m not immortal) will listen to for a long time, start with most the tracks on Thriller or Off The Wall and the Jackson Five material. Seriously dude the world doesn’t revolve around your tastes.
IMHO Jackson's greatest song was from the movie "Free Willey" where he sang "Will You Be There". I loved it.
He later performed this song on stage with a black choir and at the end, when he narrated the finish to the song, an Angel floated down and wrapped her wings around him.
THAT song, THAT scene should be used at the end of Jackson's tribute.
That said, I wasn't a fan of his.

Michael Jackson was such a huge part of my teenage years. I and my girlfriends spent untold hours trying to do the “moonwalk” and thinking we were so cool because we could do some of his moves (or we thought we could anyway). We walked around town for hours carrying a boom box listening to his music and walking to the beat in front of the guys we were trying so hard to impress. lol -
So instead of blasting him now in death, I’ll walk down memory lane and remember him back in the 80’s when life for me was full of fun and innocence for me.

MJ's Thriller was the biggest selling album of all time though. It can be found at any garage sale or thrift store nowadays.
I wonder how many mp3s he's sold. Be interesting to see if anyone actually STILL listens to Thriller. That time period was a time of awful plastic garbage music, and MJ was the king of the heap.
I grew up listening to that stuff, too! Caught all the legendary AM stations (this side of the Mississippi) after sundown.

This is all about favorably redefining MJs image to “KING of POP”. His estate is apx $500,000,000.00 in debt. It makes good business sense to exploit his royalties.

I remember MJ from his heyday in the early 80’s. I was just out of basic training when I bought a boom box, and the first bit of music I bought for it was “Thriller”. I don’t think there was a bad song on the entire project.
I guess the saddest part of the whole mess was that, despite all his fame, all the money, all the good things that were dropped in Michael’s life...he was EMPTY. He had no satisfaction in life. He hated the way he looked, so he had numerous surgeries. He had no childhood, so he tried to ‘recreate’ his childhood with Neverland Ranch and all the goodies that had.
He never had a normal life, and he never found anything that was truly worth living for. And now, he never will.
There were far superior singer/songwriters that exhibited greater talent with more sophistication and lasting social impact.
As a person, he was beyond weird. He was a homosexual, child molesting pervert that damaged so many innocent children - probably beyond repair. May God help those souls as there is a special place in hell for perverts like MJ.
Finally, the media's adulation of the pervert clearly demonstrates their embracing of his Godless lifestyle.
It really would be nice if some here would try to have more feeling for the victims of pedophiles rather than gushing over perverts and acting as if their victims don't exist.
MJ's death is a good thing, the same as with any other serial rapist. The fact that his preferred victims were little boys does not make this less so.
May his victims find peace. May Jackson find justice.
Yes, I suppose you could say sale of 65 million copies of a single album would make it "catchy", and he might have had a "catchy" career after album sales of 750 million (so far).
As for the rest, I don't know if we'll ever know the whole truth about him. I suppose his supporters don't want us to find out everything. There's one judgment that he couldn't escape, though.
Ok he may not have sold more than anyone else, but he did sell a hell of a lot which goes back to the original point of why his death is being covered heavily.
