The Japanese also had a jet fighter that they didn’t get into production before the war ended.

I saw one in the Smithsonian warehouses in Silver Springs and it was stashed almost next to the Enola Gay.

It was small and was probably one of the finest flush skin rivited aircraft i’ve ever seen.

For all of the , if they had of built it it would have change the war junk, one thing that they do not mention is that the german jet engines at the time, including those on the ME-262, had a total life between overhaul of about 5 hours flying time. This meant that the engines were subject to failure after that time. This was due to the fact that they had not developed the metallurgy skills to extrude single crystal blades and the necessary metal coatings that came into use in the late 1940s on.

In his book, Adolph Galland was appaled that Hitler wanted to use the 262 as a bomber; the application of the aircraft was mis-directed for a good part of its life.

If Hitler would have allowed the few 262’s to be used solely for defense, many more airmen would have died, production would not have been hurt as much and the war would have been expanded, time wise, on the WESTERN front.

We forget how the Soviets were advancing...

German war production was hobbled because of ineffeciency. It wasn’t until 1942, after Speer took charge, that it began to reach WWII levels. Too many party hacks in charge.

If Hitler had stood on the defense in the West and used his reserves in the East, he might have slowed that Soviet Advance and kept access to the Black Sea fields.

Actually what really might have changed the Air War in Europe would have been the ME-262 being mass produced and given a longer range.

Yep. That bird was waaay ahead of its time

So far ahead you'd almost think someone from the future gave it to them.

I lasted for about 20 seconds on the psychedelic garbage on your first link. Didn’t bother with the second one.

Everything in life is related to timing. Had Hitler delayed the invasion of the Sudetenland a year...had he waited until 1941 to take France and Netherlands....had he waited until 1943 to take on Russia...these delays would have given the technology and the lead over enemies.

This is the curious “what if” scenario. But Hitler had no patience, no military thinking strategy, and other than a 5-star speech ability...he could not lead. You are looking at a guy who had no real plan after getting to the top.

My father’s AAA battery was overflown by some ME 262’s. It worried them because although the radar could pick it up the plane was much too fast for the guns to track it.

oldbill,

Important to note that by 1944 America had overwhelming technical leadership in strategic bombers, naval aircraft, long range fighters, and naval anti-aircraft weapons.

America also completely dominated logistic and signals technology.

We had the best truck, the best jeep, the best cargo aircraft, the best naval transport, the best field radios, and the best field telephone system.

That allowed us to maneuver and advance with more precision, more speed, and at greater distances than any military force in history.

Just to keep things in perspective...Germany used more horses in World War 2 than it did in World War 1.

Flying wings were not a rousing success before computers.

The 1950's movie "War of the Worlds" showed footage of a flying-wing jet aircraft that was part of the US air force.

The Blitzkreig style of warfare had worked to well on the Checks, Poles,Dutch, French, there was no reason to believe it would not work just as well on the Russians.First problem was distance, all of the above mentioned countries are relatively small as far as mileage is concerned, Russians just kept fighting and falling back, and the German supply lines kept getting longer and longer. Next thing was the Russians were pretty well equip ed, and had a lot more troops than Germany could allocate to that front, and then Winter. Germany planned to be in Moscow by Winter, but it didn't happen.

Hitler had a huge plan, for a thousand year Aryan reign. It was just that he failed to achieve the last 990 years of it. His overly ambitious plan bit off more than it could chew. Perhaps if he'd had the many millions of Jews on his side that he chose to make enemies of, he could have won the war in Europe.

He reminds me of another narcissist and great speaker with a foolish and overly ambitious plan to remake their nation into a socialist utopia.

Woof,

In 1941 the Russian Revolution was barely 20 years old, and tens of millions of Soviet citizens hated Stalin.

Hitler's political strategy for a fast victory against the Soviet Union was based on the completely reasonable prediction that the country would collapse and break apart, just like it eventually did in the early 1990’s.

The problem for the German military was that the German government was led by a homicidal psychopath.

When the military seized a town, SS brigades would arrive within days and slaughter the Jews, slaughter the bureaucrats, slaughter the intelligentsia, and expropriate the farmers.

Most Soviet citizens soon made the completely reasonable decision to join the enemy they knew and fight against the enemy they did not know.

"Of course if that happened Germany still didn’t have the pilots or the fuel to fly them toward the war’s end."

The Germans had plenty of fuel. They were proficient at making low sulfur synthetic diesel from coal. Something we should be doing today with our vast coal reserves. We could easily produce cheap, high quality diesel fuel for the entire nations needs. But oh no, not with the enviro wacko's running the country now.

It is now the Hysterical Channel, with all kinds of shows promoting one disaster after another - “World without People”, Global Warming scanios, Global Cooling Scenarios, Signs of the Apocylpse, etc.

I can hardly watch it, unless there is something about WW2.

I have seen our old flying wings and thought they looked cool
as can be.
Saw prop driven ones as well as jet driven ones.
You say they were not too stable??????
I’d not heard that?

We forget how the Soviets were advancing...

One factor in the successful Soviet offensives in '43 is that the Luftwaffe was largely pulled off of the Eastern front to attempt to deal with the Anglo-American Bomber offensive. That said, I doubt that this accelerated the success of those offensives by more than 6 months (if that).
