Palin Is No Reagan
American Spectator ^ | 7.6.09 @ 7:45AM | By Philip Klein

Posted on 07/06/2009 7:22:56 AM PDT by Behind Liberal Lines

[C]omparisons do a disservice to Reagan, who not only served two full terms as governor of California, but also spent decades studying the issues and immersing himself in conservative philosophy. His writings and radio commentaries make this abundantly clear. He proved people wrong because they objectively were wrong. This does not mean that whenever the media writes off or attacks a conservative politician that he or she is the next Reagan

****

to win and govern effectively you have to do more than "galvanize the party base" and "convince conservatives" -- you also have to convince independents and even some Democrats, as Reagan did [but] instead of going back to Alaska to gain more governing experience as many advised, Palin resigned after just two and a half years on the job. And there’s nothing to indicate that she has the slightest interest in boning up on policy. Honestly, what’s her incentive to study policy and do the boring task of governing? No matter what she does, her army of apologists will make excuses for her and lash out at those who dare to criticize her by accusing them of being liberal elitists who are threatened by her sheer awesomeness....

[N]one of this really matters if Palin intends to leave elective politics and become some sort of television or radio personality. My comments are only meant as a response to those who are still seriously suggesting her as a potential presidential candidate. Last October, an ABC/Washington Post poll found that only 35 percent of Americans thought Palin was qualified enough to be president, yet now her boosters expect us to believe that an additional nine months in office is all she needed to assauge Americans' concerns, allowing her to resign and prepare for a presidential run.

You beg for politicians that aren’t corrupt, and here is the first moral presidential candidate in years and she’s too naive or sexy to qualify...

I sense internal confusion, here.

Perhaps Governor Palin isn’t resigning so as to free herself from the job.

Perhaps Governor Palin is resigning to as to free herself from the “-R” which follows the title Governor of Alaska.

Perhaps the GOP had better pick a lane. Now. Or become a historical footnote.

[Reagan was a political heavyweight. Palin is a political lightlight. End of story.]

That’s ridiculous. Reagan was in his 70s when he hit the presidency, Palin will be getting better with time. And bad as Carter was, we will now be in the middle of a full depression with an out and out Marxist.

Unless you can name another conservative LEADER who takes no prisoners, I’m signing up with Palin’s army. You can sit on the sidelines with Romney or McCain.

I hate to burst your third party dreams, but she is not going to do that...

Like Reagan, she takes swipes at the mainstream media. And like Reagan, she makes it clear she is not afraid to take views contrary to conventional wisdom in Washington. Most of all, Palin came across as genuine and real. In a convincing way.

Sarah Palin will never be president. She is un-electable. Freepers are wasting their time glomming onto her in the faint hope she’ll be another Reagan. She’s not even close.

Reagan’s the benchmark, for good or ill.

Palin does something no leftist or left leaning politician can do -

speak from her core values and be genuine and honest about them.

You really can’t fake that.

"You beg for politicians that aren’t corrupt"

I certainly prefer politicians who aren't corrupt, yes, though I've never mentioned corruption in this discussion.

"and here is the first moral presidential candidate in years"

I guess I just need to get used to the hyperbole in these Palin threads.

"and she’s too naive or sexy to qualify..."

Inexperienced is a better word than naive. Her sexiness doesn't matter to me either way.

"an ABC/Washington Post poll found that only 35 percent of Americans thought Palin was qualified enough to be president,"

HA....elitist, college educated, liberal friends of ours would be among THAT 35%.....I'm NOT impressed....they thought Obomba was more qualified....HAHAHAHAHA

“The need to believe outstrips reason....

I’ll give her a chance but I’ll pass on ordering Palin PJs, posters and lunchboxes....”

Thanks for the laugh. The image of freepers sitting in their Palin PJs, with the Palin poster behind them, munching on lunch from the Palin lunchbox while they post... Now that’s funny!

...also, in the era of our affirmative action wunderkinder, it appears a thick resume carries less weight than before.

I still can’t get over the fact that she resigned after barely two years. I can’t possibly see how this can help her Presidential hopes.

Exactly.

Reagan set high goals and standards. To that end, she does emulate him. But she doesn’t have to parrot him, in fact, it would be a disservice to do so. She is her own person and a most welcome and refreshing change from the status quo.

I wish people would stop making comparisons, let her be her own person. After awhile, watch people start saying, “he/she could be the next Sarah Palin”.
