Ethnic Tensions Escalate in China's Xinjiang Region

Thousands of angry ethnic Han Chinese wielding clubs and machetes roamed this capital city of Xinjiang territory and engaged in sporadic revenge attacks against Uighurs after deadly riots Sunday. The fresh unrest prompted Chinese President Hu Jintao to fly home early Wednesday from Italy, where he had been scheduled to attend the meeting of the Group of Eight leading nations. His sudden departure from such a high-profile international event underlined the severity of the challenge the Xinjiang violence presents to China's leadership. In Urumqi, authorities imposed a curfew and security forces tried to keep the two ethnic groups apart in an effort to rein in the fresh wave of hostility engulfing the city. The 11-hour curfew, which started Tuesday at 9 p.m. local time, appeared to restore a level of calm to the city, and streets in the city center remained largely deserted as of early Wednesday.

Will the Magic Negro stick his nose into Chicom politics now that his fellow faithful are getting their asses kicked?

Not if he ever wants to see his nose again. The ChiComs don't mess around. They own our debt, provide a good chunk of our manufactured goods and can play havoc with our trade with Japan and South Korea. Heck they can just start selling good weapons to North Korea and really mess with us. Sun Tzu vs the Saul Alinsky, I'm not betting on the Saul this time.

The Chicoms conquered the Uighurs in 1946, at a time when Western countries were *leaving* the lands they had ruled for hundreds of years. You will find, as China's territorial extent increases along with its military power, that a lot of people of other religions won't get along with Chinese occupation troops and the tens of millions of settlers they bring with them.

From a PR standpoint, the Chinese are fortunate to be dealing with a restless Caucasian (Turkic) minority. The rest of the world will avert its eyes, since Caucasians are fair game, and the Chinese are in vogue.
