Looks like the titanium tear straps did their job and stopped the tear in the aluminum fuselage from getting any bigger than the space between the tear straps.

Must be a shocker. This time Boeing. It seems like metal fatigue to me.
As for composites, it will be interesting how the composite jumbos from Airbus and Boeing (e.g. the Dreamliner) hold up as the years pass. At initial production composites are better than metal, but I wonder how they hold up over the long-term? For instance, one can tell as metal ages and fatigue/cracks/etc start to set in. I am sure there must be ways of telling the same for composites, but I have not heard of any (which of course doesn't mean they don't exist).
