I think, given that the member of Congress who drafted H.R. 3200 read and take seriously people like Klien, Yglesias, and Singer, we should be very troubled by Section 1233 of H.R. 3200. The section, titled “Advanced Care Planning Consultation” requires senior citizens to meet at least every 5 years with a doctor or nurse practitioner to discuss dying with dignity.
The section requires that they talk to their doctor, not a lawyer, about living wills, durable healthcare powers of attorney, hospice, etc. Given the progressive intelligentsia already being on the record in favor of euthanizing the elderly, it is no small leap to see where the Democrats are headed with this.
Legally forcing senior citizens to have “death with dignity schedules every few years is just another way to say the government wants to make sure seniors know it is time to commit suicide to save the system money.
And saving any medical system through encouraged deaths of the elderly or unborn is not a medical system worth having. The Hippocratic Oath requires doctors to “do no harm.” That’s meant toward the patient, not the costs to the government.

It’s kind of fascinating how the libs are so into letting the government have a say in how long people live, and under what conditions they should be euthanized. I rarely see a lib as intensely interested in a topic as they are in this.

I think it speaks to their fear of religion and the absence of it in their lives—I write this as an atheist. Liberals both fear and hate religion, but they all have this thirst for the control they are always complaining about that exists in the church. In its place, they want the state to be The Authority—a kind of church where THEY get to decide the rules. And their fervor over offering up one’s loyalty to their “religion” is scary.
Libs want to be able to control the *entire* life cycle of human beings. From deciding who gets to be born and who not, to who is ready for state administered death (not for committing a crime, mind you) to everything in between. Liberalism is about control. They look at the “masses” as laboratory animals in need of control - who are to be ‘birthed’, fed and taken care of and finally killed.

Given the debate over Terri Schiavo, I don’t think Democrats are the only ones in favor of this. I fought with people over this culture of Life vs Death right here on this board. Whether it’s abortion, embryonic stem cells, the disabled, the elderly w/assisted suicide, or genetic manipuation it all revolves around the same issue. Far too many on both aisles are committed to death so as to bring themselves comfort.

Yes, I agree that some real-life demonstrations would provide some of the best teaching moments that we could hope to find. I figure 650,000 would be a good beginning number...
and to demonstrate leadership in this example of selflessness, of 'not being a burden to your children', our entire Congress will make their appointments tomorrow, right?
