What if I don't want health insurance?
Christian Science Monitor, via Yahoo news ^ | Mon Jul 20, 5:00 am ET | Becky Akers

New York – I'm one of the nearly 50 million Americans who don't have health insurance. I don't want it, either.

But the bill the House of Representatives is debating would force me to buy it. How good can any product be if Congress compels me to purchase it?

Politicians and interest groups have been trying virtually all my life to foist medical insurance on me. But their proposals rest on mistaken and even insulting assumptions.

First, they presume that everyone wants, needs, and should have abundant medical attention. But I come from a long-lived and healthy family, I've been a vegetarian since childhood because I've never liked the way meat tastes, I don't smoke, and I love to hike – the more miles the better.

I am disgustingly healthy, so much so that the only doctors I see – or try to: I'm near-sighted – are ophthalmologists. Could I be hit by a bus tomorrow when I head out for my daily walk? Possibly. But that's such an unlikely disaster that I've chosen to spend my money on more personally pressing needs than medical insurance.

On the other hand, unlikely disasters do happen. So I might purchase catastrophic coverage if it were reasonably priced – just as I might visit doctors for lesser complaints if their care were reasonably priced.

It sounds like the old joke about the two revolutionaries.
"Come the Revolution, we'll all eat berries with cream!"
"I don't like berries with cream"
"Come the Revolution, you MUST eat berries with cream!"
That old joke isn't so funny anymore.

Becky,
Buy some damn insurance BEFORE you get sick or injured, so you don’t end up being some democrat poster child for the heartless US healthcare system

Hopefully she’s well healed enough that if she comes down with cancer etc she can pay for it out of her own pocket.

Becky could probably get a decent policy on her own for less than $100 a month, but it’s her choice. We pay $384 for a family of four with a 5K deductible.

I put forth the same proposition yesterday...

What will happen to Christian Scientists who deny the existence of disease, and have set up a parallel system of treatment using Christian Science practitioners....and Jehovah's witnesses who refuse to accept blood transfusions?

How about those whose religion dismisses medical practice? Isn’t it somewhere in the Federalist papers about the separation of church and state?

well, there is the erroneous assumption built in that people that don’t have health insurance don’t have it because they can’t get it. The jerkoff Congressmen don’t even ask why the people don’t have it. Maybe they are self insured. A lot of companies are. Surely there are some who choose to be irresponsible and let it be someone else’s problem same as not wearing a seat belt. My mom used to pay my neice’s because her parents were too busy smoking dope to worry about health ins for their daughter. There are tons of people like that. The Democrats would like you to think those folks are worried sick about not have health insurance and they are working 2 or three minimum wage jobs just trying to get to where they can afford their house trailer, their used car payment and qualify for affordable health insurance, but that is a steaming load of delusion. many of them are “partying” “finding themselves” running through spouses, avoiding child support, trying to get over, etc.

Congress cannot compel you into entering a contract. 13th Amendment. United States v Reynolds. It’s “settled law”.

I’m dying to know what they plan to do with the Amish, who are exempted from Social Security because their religion prohibits the owning of any type of insurance whatsoever.

Love to see the heavy hand of gov’t going after people in buggies.

I am so tired of news sources, including this one, who consistently repeat the faked statistic about the “uninsured!” Even if I support the Christian Science position on insurance WHY say there are “nearly 50 million!” IT’s totally false!

Becky, what happens when you have an accident (of your fault)and you are paralyzed from the neck down-who pays for your treatments and for future care?? What happens if you should have a stroke at age 48?? or need a transplant?

Oh I know, the taxpayer and other insured people who end up paying for your care when you declare bankruptcy

I bet I miss-read your post...popcorn for the battle, the loser, or the winner? Christian Scientists are not all celebrities......Their beliefs are as valid as any religious affiliation.

I think obama adminstration did away with settled law- where have you been for the past 6 months when GM shareholders bit the big banana and banks were compelled to swallow debts and nullify employee pay contracts?

and again, I am sick of yuppies and muppies who pay more for cell phone service than a health policy and then- when the unplanned happens- they show up as “uninsured Americans” who think healthcare is their right when they get sick or injured and convince stupid voters we all have to pay for their shortsightedness.

They annnoy me as much as uninsured drivers...speaking of compelled contracts...

This disgusts me.

The government should put poison in all the fruit and vegetables and the antidote in meat.
