When United States citizens reach the age of 65 they are forced into Medicare and out of any private insurance option for coverage of their healthcare. The government sets the dollar amount doctors, other healthcare providers, and hospitals will be paid for the treatments of a Medicare patient. When a Medicare payment is decided, often the fee is based on which special interest group lobbies the federal government most effectively. No efficacy research for a particular treatment and no market forces enter into this entirely arbitrary decision made in Washington, D.C. Once a fee is established, Medicare pays 80% of the allowable charge. Twenty per cent may be covered by supplemental insurance or patient out of pocket payment. The patient cannot pay his own money for care above and beyond the Medicare allowable–it is against the law.

At my Doctors' Office, I noticed a new sign: "We no longer accept Medicare Patients." I inquired the rationale, and was told that it was bad enough dealing with the regular medical insurance companies, but it wasn't worth dealing with the Government.

Side note. Saw my doctor this morning and asked him about his take on this mess. He said it would kill our health care as we know it. Told him I have have been busy with contacting congress, posting to newspaper sites, blogs, etc. He said "thanks, wish more would."

So, like SS, the government steals money from your paycheck and you have no say-so. Then you pay again when you turn 65 - SS becomes taxable income and you pay for Medicare again.

Another “Trail of Tears”. The young and the old, weak and infirm will die out on this trail as they did once before. Several of us who have had parents on Medicare become ill within the last few years have noticed how benefits were nonexistent, when we tried to buy the insurance they needed to be covered with prescription coverage, we were told it was against the law. For those of us who value, love and honor our parents, it becomes an expensive and futile quest to save their lives. In the end, we can't make up for the system that works against us. They die. Game, Set, Match. Cry.
