Senate confirms Sotomayor, first Hispanic justice
The Hill ^ | 08/06/2009 | J. Taylor Rushing

The Senate on Thursday sent Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court with a modest display of bipartisan support, making her the first Hispanic justice and only the third woman to serve on the high court.

The 68-31 vote held few surprises, as a small band of Republicans joined Democrats in confirming her 72 days after President Barack Obama nominated the former prosecutor and judge. Her confirmation paves the way for Sotomayor to begin assembling her staff and prepare for the court to convene in October.

Spanish and portugeses Jews are one community. They were interchangeble and after the expulsion lived as one. They were one community before thre was a distinction among gentile hispanics between catalonians, portugese and spanish.
By your logic Maimonides wasn’t spanish but grenadian.
Besides there is no evidence that Cardozo was Portugese not spanish

Why, just because of a few RINOS?

Wouldn’t supporting selective candidates be better?

Agree, better dumb that clever. My sarcasm misfired, and for that I am sorry.

She thinks she is clever, but the weight of her rulings reveal otherwise — A dolt.

I don’t know.

You tell me.

Do I have to elect 100 republicans in order to get 50 of them to vote properly?

If they can break with the party, I can break with the party.

And so I have.

The time for isle crossing is over.

If you go to the other side, you can stay on the other side.

Actions have consequences.

Voting to put a sexist, racist, anti-constitutionalist on the SCOTUS is the last straw for me.

Hopefully the hispanics will support the GOP. I know I won’t.

A frequently overturned dolt.

Thus other judges seem to find her legal arguments less than convincing.

Not that I wish a short life on anybody, but being overweight and diabetic....... I hope that she doesn't occupy 1/9th of the SCOTUS power for too long.

Seeings as how she is replacing the feckless idiot Souter, I see little change as far as the “balance” of the SCOTUS.

I predicted 65 or so votes here weeks ago. No big surprise on number, but a few surprises on the identity of some of the GOP yes votes, like retiring Kit Bond and Gregg of NH.

It sickens me to see Bond’s name on that list. A once decent Republican reduced to a sniveling RINO. It’s a good thing he’s retiring after his term is up. It would be a great shame to see him get his RINO butt kicked during the primary.

I say good riddance to bad baggage.

Well she was Valedictorian (sp?)of her high school, so I don’t think you can say she’s not smart. Racist, yes. Dumb, no.

From Senator Gregg’s statement supporting the confirmation:
“Judge Sotomayor is President Obama’s choice, and she is obviously well qualified to be the next Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Her views and decisions, although strongly stated, are certainly not out of the mainstream of American jurisprudence or political thought.”

I wonder who got to him. I wonder how and why he was persuaded to issue the op-ed. Simple. I don't think anyone got to him. He just lacks core values.
