GM predicts 230 MPG for Volt

General Motors Co. predicted Tuesday that its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car will get 230 miles per gallon of gas in city driving.

If confirmed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which tests for mileage figures posted on new car stickers, the Volt would be the first car to exceed triple-digit gas mileage, a GM official said.

Toyota’s Prius, the most efficient car now sold in the U.S., gets 48 miles per gallon.

The Volt is powered by an electric motor and battery pack with a 40-mile range. After that, a small internal combustion engine kicks in to generate electricity for a range of up to of 300 miles. The battery pack can be recharged from a standard home outlet.

The downside is that the Volt is expected to cost nearly $40,000, nearly double the sticker price of some economy hybrids.

The Volt is scheduled to appear in showrooms in late 2010.

Let’s see. I can buy a car that gets 20 mpg for $25,000 or I can spen $40,000 for 230 mpg. The way I figure, if gas is around $2.50 gallon I can travel 120,000 miles for the $15,000 difference.

Plug your Volt into any household outlet.
If you do that at work you will be charged by the company.
At home plug in costs the homeowner how much per plug in?
Bologna!

Government Motors, claims aplenty but no independent verification. I can see people driving down a street and running out of power, knock on a family's door and ask for a quick charge. LOL. Maybe they will invite you in for a cup of coffee. Amen.

Buy a comparable sized car for $20k, put the other $20k in an interest bearing large sum bank account, get thirty miles to the gallon in your conventional car and drive 150,000 miles (assuming $4 gas.)

There won't be any way to figure out the real difference in costs until we see how much it costs to plug in your car every night. A 40 mile car would do me good 90% of the time, but not so much when I need to drive to the ski slope in bad weather.

I still think $40k is a lot to pay for a small car. Remember that the $40k price tag is already subsidized by every American taxpayer.

If the EPA does not push back against this blatant lie, you will know that the fix is in, and the Obama Administration has their thumb on the scale, and will tell any lie to make sure GM succeeds.

Neil Cavuto said the Volt shows that the government could also do a good job on healthcare.

“Nissan Leaf = 367 mpg, no tailpipe, and no gas required. Oh yeah, and it’ll be affordable too!”

NissanEV shoots back at the latest Volt hype on Twitter, using the same DOE estimate as GM. That hit from the PR crackpipe sure didn’t last long.

Why is GM asking $40,000 when Nissan will ask about $15,000 for the Leaf. And the Leaf gets 367 mpg. And it will be on sale in 2010.

On that basis, an electric golf cart gets 10 trillion mpg.

My minivan get 20,000 mpkw, assuming I turn on the garage lights and use my electric garage door opener. My Subaru gets 10 times that since I park it outside.

The battery pack can be recharged from a standard home outlet.

Which we all know is FREE and has no emissions because the power is generated by converting bunny farts to rainbows!

The EPA has already contradicted GM.

Not much of a contradiction.
