The president ended the call by wishing the rabbis "shanah tovah," or happy new year — in reference to the High Holidays a month from now. A reader points out that President Obama's call with the rabbis today — as recorded in Rabbi Jack Moline's and other clerics' Twitter feeds — freights health care reform with a great deal of religious meaning, and veers into the blend of policy and faith that outraged liberals in the last administration.

Is this a sign that the Jews are accepting Obama as the Messiah? Or will they properly reject his claims to Deity as blasphemy? Obama’s demagoguery now reaches a new high water mark. Will religion continue to accommodate Obama’s claim to Deity? Will the Jews continue to be the government’s partner in matters of life an death? We know that the liberal fascists believe themselves to be God, and to have the right to play God in every aspect of human life, but they rarely admit it so proudly as Obama has done.

If you've never heard the "we are partners" phrase before that's because there is no such passage in the Torah. There is in Kiddushin 30b of the Talmud the statement approximately, "there are three partners in the formation of a person: the Holy One, Blessed be He, his father and his mother. How that morphed into BHO's little mashup with "life and death" I cannot say. I am however, dismayed that a large number of so-called rabbis didn't 1. spot the error and 2. proclaim that far from giving us the power of life and death in health care situations, we are expressly forbidden to cause death. My dismay is magnified by the fact that this "telephone conference" occurred right before Rosh Chodesh Elul, that is the start of the 30 days before Rosh Hashanah. Rather more needs to be said on this, and I hope those with authority do so.
