European Space Agency astronaut Christer Fuglesang, a particle physicist and avid sailor with one previous shuttle flight to his credit, is taking the center seat on the middeck for ascent. He’ll be a spacewalker on this flight as mission specialist No. 4. The 52-year-old is a native of Stockholm, Sweden.

Retired Army colonel and helicopter pilot Pat Forrester has boarded the space shuttle tonight to be seated in the flight deck’s aft-right seat and serve as mission specialist No. 1. He grew up in Springfield, Virginia, attended West Point and has flown in space twice before.

Sure, there isn't much new being explored or discovered by the Shuttle and the Station, but there are much more wasteful government programs, and there is still the prestige of operating the best manned space program.

And I'm pretty sure Shuttle launches are much less than a billion dollars a piece.

The final Discovery astronaut has boarded the shuttle today. Jose Hernandez, mission specialist No. 2 and flight engineer, has now entered the hatch. He will sit in the flight deck center seat, giving an extra set of eyes to aid the commander and pilot watch displays and switches during launch and landing.

The 47-year-old, born in Stockton, California, is the son of a Mexican migrant family who worked to harvest fruits and vegetables. He earned degrees in electrical engineering and worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Johnson Space Center before becoming an astronaut. This will be his first spaceflight.

Hopefully we’ll get to see a launch. Just heard on NASA channel that there are some storm cells and lightening in the area.

I have a feeling this is gonna be an exercise in futility, just like Endevour’s many launch-attempts were.

*sigh* Florida summer weather.....

Weather officer is getting ready to lower the chance of meeting the weather criteria to 40% (60% chance of violating the launch criteria).

So they went from 80% chance of being able to launch to 60% chance of not being able to launch- due to weather. I’m still hoping to see a launch tonight- fingers crossed.

Tune in weather channel.

I think i just heard Paul Goodloe say” If i were a betting man, i’d say the shuttle won't launch tonight”.

Storms with lightning moving north up the coast on radar.

They just showed an outdoor shot of the shuttle-saw some lightening.

It also looks like they are burning off some kind fuel? Anybody know what that is?

I saw that “burn-off” too.

It puzzled me.

Looked like a refinery stack around Port Linden.

They always burn off liquid hydrogen during fueling. Looks a little more spectacular at night.

As for as what a Phase II lightning alert means, this is direct from a NASA paper on lightning at KSC....

KSC pioneered a two-phase lightning warning policy. In Phase I, an Advisory is issued that lightning is forecast within five miles of the designated site within 30 minutes of the effective time of the Advisory. The 30-minute warning gives personnel in unprotected areas time to get to protective shelter and gives personnel working on lightning sensitive tasks time to secure operations in a safe and orderly manner. A Phase II Warning is issued when lightning is imminent or occurring within five miles of the designated site. All lightning-sensitive operations are terminated until the Phase II Warning is lifted. This twophase policy provides adequate lead time for sensitive operations without shutting down less sensitive operations until the hazard becomes immediate.

If you wouldn’t mind another question: How much time do they need for the weather to be clear so they can launch?

I believe for lightning, it has to be continuously clear for at least 15 minutes without a danger of going back into “RED”, although it might be 30 minutes.

The fact that they’re still going through the countdown is just academic. Practice, practice, practice.

Anvil clouds, cumulus clouds, field mills, and flight through rain are currently RED. It isn’t just lightning they’re dealing with. Since Challenger, they take NO chances.

Oh, and field mills are equipment that determine the strength of an electrical field in an area. If the conditions are RED, that means the electrical fields in the area are condusive to possible lightning strikes.

I'm doing the “evening shift” this week.

Was/Am, still hoping here.

Also would have a shot on the balcony, of catching a visual
before the main engines cut-off.

If you’re waiting for official word, I wouldn’t bother. The Shuttle is NOT flying tonight. Count on it.
