Obama plans to bring Palestinians and Israelis face to face at UN

Catherine Philp, Diplomatic Correspondent

President Obama plans to bring Israeli and Palestinian leaders together for a face-to-face meeting at the United Nations General Assembly next month in a bid to revive long-stalled peace talks.

Plans for the meeting are being drawn up despite the failure of Mr Obama’s special envoy George Mitchell to strike a compromise over Jewish settlements that would allow the resumption of the negotiations, which were abandoned in March.

Washington is backing Palestinian calls for a freeze on settlement activity as a precondition to talks, leading to a rare public falling out with Israel.

In his talks with Mr Mitchell in London today, Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, failed to win the compromise he was seeking, which would exempt settlements in East Jerusalem and continue to allow “natural growth” of existing West Bank settlements.

Israel views the proposed meeting between Mr Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, as a way of luring the Palestinians into talks by the back door without bending to their preconditions.

Gee, I didn’t know Hamas had a country, and was a member at the UN. So how does Obama propose to bring a certified terrorist group to this imaginary table?

Not to mention Israel, who should rightly refuse to be part of this lame brains dog and pony show.

What i don't get, is what the seating arrangements will be at the UN general assembly. Do Hamas "Palestinians" people sit on the laps of Egypt, Syrian, Lebanon represetitives?

Maybe Obama will bring them folding chairs and set thm up in the corner?

What flag will they fly?

Shouldn't they be arrested on the spot if they show up?

So many questions....

PM Netanyahu should not be negotiating with George Mitchell. He should send a trusted minister. He is a head of state.

“Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, failed to win the compromise he was seeking, which would exempt settlements in East Jerusalem and continue to allow “natural growth” of existing West Bank settlements. “

Who failed to win the compromise? It seems to me the US was the one who lost this argument.

Well, that's only been going on for a couple decades or so.

One thing I liked about Gerald Ford was, when he fell down a flight of stairs, he did so literally rather than figuratively, and when it happened, he not only didn't know it was coming, he also wasn't trying to do it, and wasn't going to destroy the United States in the process.
