This is my first vanity ever and likely my last but I have a question that some enterprising pajama journalist might investigate and answer. Why was there total silence from the Kopechne family after there daughters death?. There were no criminal charges against Teddy at the time , but there were never any civil procedings instigated either. Not a word from Mary Jo's family. Were they payed off? "Camelot" may have prevented it then but there is no reason it can't be investiagted now. Thoughts?
Just a guess, but as their daughter was perhaps a mind-numbed supporter of Kennedy I assume mom and dad might have been as well. It’s damned hard to imagine that hero worship would override the love of one’s daughter or the pure hatred of the thug responsible for her murder, but when it comes to the left, is anything surprising? Had she been mine, I would have spent my entire LIFE working to send the bum to prison. Naturally I don’t know the true story, but I can’t think of any other reason for helping the killer of one’s daughter escape justice.
Most likely any revelation of facts regarding her death that would have come about would have damaged their daughter’s reputation even more than just rumors. They also new that speaking out and questioning what had happened to their daughter would caused the instant termination of their lives.
I’d like to hear what Carla Gaviglio has to say about Teddy.
I think you hit the nail on the head. If it would have been my child, I would have done anything in my power to go after Kennedy. I think they were naive, and as we all know, once the K Machine kicks in, all bets are off.
I was just a teen with this happened, but I still remember it, and always will.
I've always been intrigued by the Kennedy's, and their deceit started generations ago, and when Joe Sr. married for, not love..but power...he instilled that in his children.
I've read many books and researched the history of the family. There are many victims left to tell no tales, (Marilyn Monroe being one of them).
Jr. Sr made a pack with two entities, the press and the mafia. One of them got his son killed, the other is still his in his pocket, even thought he is long gone, the MSM is still trying to keep the "Camelot" fallacy alive. RIP, Mary Jo.
I caught part of an interview on the radio this morning, some author who had written about this. He claimed that the Kopechne’s were not threatened or paid off. That they were devout Catholics who chose not to push prosecution of Kennedy. Personally, I could never understand why they didn’t. Despite all the eulogies for Kennedy today, I feel that this incident that happened outside the spotlight did more to define his character than anything he did in the glare of the spotlight of “public service.” He ran away and let Mary Jo die. Glenn Beck said it well—what should be taken away from this is the example of someone who fought and pushed for what they believed. That is an example that those of us on the other side of the issues should follow.
Yes, somebody posted this picture of her at Eunice Shriver's funeral:
My cousin reminded me that some years back, Bob Dornan, a then GOP House member from California, sought out the Kopechnes to try to learn more about their daughter’s death. According to Dornan, the Kopechnes learned that their own attorney had been bought off in some fashion by the Kennedys so as to influence the Kopechnes to be loyal to Sen. Kennedy. In time, the Kopechnes became quite bitter toward the Kennedys.
Ah, thanks, she looks pretty good. I’ve always felt rather sorry for her.
What no black? She looks like she is ready for the cabana party.
I think they were given alot of phoney sympathy from the Kennedys and were kind of charmed into going along with staying silent. I bet they were convinced that it was just “a terrible accident” and that The Swimmer really felt terrible about it, and also reminded of the media circus that would come and how their dear daughters name would be drug through the mud, blah blah blah. They were probably flattered by the attention they were getting from the famous Kennedys.
