Quoting White House officials, The Boston Globe said Obama will deliver a eulogy at Kennedy's funeral mass, which has been scheduled for Saturday at The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Mission Hill section of Boston.
Kennedy (77), who died on Tuesday after battling cancer, would be laid to rest at the Arlington National Cemetery, along the graveside of his other two brothers- Senator Robert F Kennedy and former President John F Kennedy.
The service will be a private, family-only affair at the national shrine, located just across the Potomac River on a bluff overlooking the capital city, The Boston Globe said.
"The nation's resting place for its heroes, Senator Kennedy spent more days than most at Arlington visiting the graves of his beloved brothers and paying tribute to the fallen men and women of Massachusetts who gave their lives for our country," said a statement issued by Kennedy's office.
Obama, who earlier called Kennedy "the greatest United States Senators of our times", issued a proclamation according to which US flag shall be flown at half-staff till August 30.
"Senator Edward M Kennedy was not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans," Obama said in the proclamation.
Later, in a joint email sent to his followers across the country, along with the First Lady, Obama said: "In the United States Senate, I can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle."
In an editorial, The New York Times said: "Kennedy, a master legislator of the modern Senate, insisted that politics be grasped through the prism of human needs."
His record shows the work of a committed, diligent legislator, and it earned the respect of those who disagreed with him as much as the loyalty of those who worked for and with him, wrote The Washington Post in its editorial.
Kennedy served as many as 46 years in the US Senate. "Taken all in all, however, Kennedy contributed enormously to the realisation of the sort of society he championed, despite -- or perhaps because of -- his failure to win the White House," The Los Angeles Times said.
"Often described as the most thoughtful and empathetic of the Kennedy brothers, and the most loving uncle to his large family, Kennedy bridged the gap between personal kindness and the politics of compassion. When pushing legislation full of complex formulas and percentages, he could always tell exactly how many families would benefit," The Boston Globe said in its editorial.

Using the dead to sell health care from our federal government.
There is no chance Obama would go up for Communion and the priest/server would give him, right? Just thinking out loud.
"He was a modest man..."
thinking the same thing.
We should offer prayers...for his victims:
- To Mary Jo...who was left unconscious and drowning in a car why the drunk driver responsible was scared out of his wits trying to figure out how to save his political career.
- To the MILLIONS of SE Asias condemned to communism, torture, and death when Kennedy prevented President Ford from upholding our treaty obligations to provide air support to South Vietnam; and then realizing the South Vietnamese were still holding their own, banned ammunitions sales to feed the weapons we left them.
- To Americans, who saw their judicial confirmation process forever poisoned by the politics of personal destruction, to satisfy the ego of one of the most self-centered spoiled brats who ever inherited a senate seat.
Just another campaign stop, a photo op, and another sales pitch for socialism...
