Henry Rollins: Where’s Mary Jo Kopechne’s eulogy ?
Hot Air ^ | August 27, 2009 | ALLAHPUNDIT

I’m not sure how the politics work here. My sense is as follows: The media’s allowed to mention Chappaquiddick in its obits of Teddy in the interest of completeness, but references should ideally be buried near the end of the piece under plenty of “health care was the cause of his life” pap. Kennedy is not, however, to be “attacked” by conservatives intent on reminding people that progressives’ newest secular saint left a woman to drown in his car, as this would be disrespectful to the dead (Teddy, that is, not Mary Jo). Where does Rollins fit, though? He’s no man of the right and Vanity Fair ain’t the Weekly Standard. Is the “unpleasantness” at the lake fair game for lefties or is She Who Shall Not Be Named off limits to them too ?

I am very well known, a United States senator. My family is incredibly powerful. There are allegations that I had been drinking heavily hours up to the time I got into the vehicle with the passenger. I deny this for the rest of my life. That at no point did I make an attempt to call for rescue would probably be considered by many people to be outrageous and horrible, perhaps a crime that would carry a prison sentence.

Can you imagine what the parents of the deceased would be going through when they found out that their 28-year-old daughter died alone in total darkness? I serve no time. Not inconvenienced by the burdensome obstacle of incarceration, I seek to maintain my elected position.

Just responding to the title here: I am NO fan of Ted, but Mary died decades ago. I would not expect a eulogy.

At least you disclosed it. But it's clearly a rhetorical question, even just looking at the title.

Kennedy called his lawyer and political handlers hours after the accident to ask what to do. They asked if he had called the police. He said no.

So, what, she was in the car...he escaped...called his f0000king lawyer?

People wonder why I have no use for frat boys.

I actually got to hang out with Henry before a Black Flag gig in Savannah. Just sitting around talking. He was good to go.

This is Rollins singing a far more appropriate song about Obama.

“Liar”

“She was the only child of insurance salesman Joseph and Gwen Kopechne.” How utterly sad. Her poor parents, having to live for decades hearing their daughter’s killer lionized.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but i am under the impression that Mary Jo did not drown, but died from asphyxiation...ran out of air. I remember reading if Teddy boy had reported the accident immediately, Mary Jo would have survived...

Henry is NEVER at a loss for words, especially when his sense of justice is offended...

I used to be a big fan of Black Flag back when I was a kid, as well as the Rollins Band, but I really don’t care what Henry Rollins thinks about political and social issues. It’s nice that he’s able to detect the hypocrisy and cruelty of how Kennedy dealt with Mary Jo Kopechne’s death, but Henry is wrong on a lot of other things.

didn’t report the accident to anyone

Correction: didn't report the accident to the police. He told his pals Markham and Gargan at the cottage who were partying with the Boiler Room Girls.

“Kopechne’s body was recovered later that morning; the diver reporting that Kopechne had positioned herself near the back seat wheel well where an air pocket had formed, and had apparently suffocated rather than drowned.”

Sure you went back for her Teddy. I cannot swim, but I bet I could have pulled someout of 7 feet of water if I had a car to stand on and the person in the car was conscious enough to try to save herself.

May the souls of Mary Jo and all those aborted babies whose deaths ted supported rest in peace. Him, not so much.

I’ve read there was a house with its lights on near the scene of the accident . All Kennedy had to do was go to the house, make a call and get help quickly. But no his political future was more important.

I was just 16 when all this happened, but, I still remember Teddy boy showing his neck brace for the world to see, what a POS.
