The 58-year-old divorcee has been getting by on unemployment compensation since her layoff in early 2008, but she’s nearly reached the end of her benefits.

18 months of government benefits???

And even though she's applied for dozens of jobs, the former rental property manager has come up empty.

18 months and could not find one job???

“I’d shovel horse poop,” she says wearily. “I haven’t even found one of those jobs available.”

18 months and could not find one job, not even shoveling sh*t. Not even minimum wage at McDonalds. I CALL SUCH BS! Do reporters even ask commonm sense questions anymore?

maybe she should start a horse pop shoveling business of her own

almost any woman who wants a job as a baby sitter or nanny can get one, or start her own business. ditto with petsitting,

Low skilled workers like those in the story are facing competition for the low end jobs with unemployed, college-educated people. It’s even harder for older workers, who would have a difficult time when the economy is good.

Unemployment is over 10% in indiana.

Back when the telcom bubble bursted I was laid off in January 2002. Other than an occassional contract work ( i did a couple month contract doing entry level basic inventory for major telecom at on point and layed out a warehouse for a small grill/gas log company at another) in and out of telcom (my speciality was project material control and logistics)I could even get most places to even talk with me. I apply for a lot of entry level jobs, clerking, stocking, janitorial...But I couldn’t even get an interview. It was until Apirl 2005 while working a contract for a vendor of a major telecom I finially land a full time job, but I had to move from Georgia to New Mexico on my dime to get it. As I said; “There but by the grace of God go many of us.”

Here is the problem. I have no idea how old you are, but at 58 I’m assuming she has bills to pay and isn’t a 20 year old, living a home with no bills who can afford to work for $8-$10 per hour and save on top of it.

There becomes a time when you have a minimum you have to work for or lose everything you’ve worked for. At 58, it’s too old to start all over again.

I need some further education so I can get caught up with technology and training (I’m equipment specific and have been since ‘78), but the training is 6 months long, at $3k per WEEK not including hotel and meals since the training centers are nowhere close to me. I don’t have that. Can you send it to me?? I promise to send you a Christmas Card every year if you do.

How will $8-$10 pay my bills working at Mickey D’s? (Provided I could get in there at 56 years old)..

I noticed my Blockbuster has a help wanted sign out. Of course, who knows how much longer Blockbuster will be in existence (I’m a real Netflix fan).

I know someone who has been looking at places like McDonalds because all she has ever done is food service/retail.

She tells me they are primarily hiring english as a second language types and she is seeing far, far fewer high school kids get these jobs.

It's a puff piece that's fits the reporter's world view - the "liberal narrative" - in short - the ideas won't be challenged.
