The Obama team is producing a series of videos taking folks behind the scenes in the White House, and the latest is about First Lady Michelle Obama's kitchen garden.
The video, debuting on AOL News, includes clips of Mrs. Obama talking about the garden, one of her signature projects since it ties in with other goals on her agenda -- encouraging healthy eating and opening up the White House to Washington area residents.
Students from a nearby school have been invited to the White House on several occasions to help in the garden. The featured figure in the video is Sam Kass, who has been involved in the garden from the start. Kass was the Obamas' Chicago chef who followed the First Couple to the White House. He is an assistant White House chef and food initiative coordinator.
Ground was cleared for the garden in March, planting started in April and Mrs. Obama harvested some produce with school children in June.
A focus in the video is the produce grown from seeds dating back to Thomas Jefferson's fields. The Jefferson bed in the garden includes arrow peas, prickly spinach, "tennis ball" lettuce, brown Dutch lettuce and savoy red cabbage.
"Thomas Jefferson, more than any one man, changed the way we eat in this country and the way we grow food," Kass says in the video, provided exclusively to AOL News. "When his ambassadors would go out all over the world, he would ask them to bring back seeds."
The first lady's garden is the first at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a victory garden during World War II.
"When we look back at the records, they had a really tough time getting it established," Kass said of Roosevelt's garden. "In the end it was a plot probably about the size of one bed that we have now."
Some reports have suggested -- incorrectly, according to the office of first lady -- that the food grown in the South Lawn garden is tainted because there is lead in the soil. That is not true. For more on that, check out my report on the DailyFlotus.

I thought her garden ended up being condemned due to it was full of sewage sludge or something along that line?
Radon I think.
“food initiative coordinator.” WTF?!!!
wait till these morons appoint a “salad czar”
Our Classy First Lady - Showing the great respect she
has for this nation and how sensitive she is concerning
her appearance.
The garden is the only thing she’s done and she didn’t even plant it- her servants did. All MO has done is take free trips and date nights with BO dragging every stray family member she can dig up to cash in on all the freebies while they can.
"Goonie-googoo woman!!!"
I am still trying to figure out how she prepared a bed, planted a garden in high heels the end of April and harvested food the beginning of June.
she watches martha stewart

Michelle Obama’s toxic veggie nightmare: White House organic garden polluted with sludge
daily finance ^ | 7/31/2009 | Alex Salkever
When First Lady Michelle Obama planted an organic vegetable garden on the White House lawn in March 2009, she hoped to both set an example of healthy eating and to grow tasty edibles for her daughters and husband. But Michelle’s organic dream has been dashed by a nasty toxic legacy lurking in the soils of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It turns out that a previous Presidential gardening team had used sewage sludge for fertilizer
Check the last paragraph. It’s about that.
Oh just fine - now we are going to have Czar Earth Worms too for the lady’s garden....
ROFL!!
And the President smokes, too.
What do you think those two outstanding servicemen think of their cargo?
