Towers are unnecessary.
You need just a VERY LONG horizontal loop antenna and it will work just fine.
It’s also very easy to fix.
Yes, I know. I'm an RF engineer. Towers are necessary, though, perhaps not because of transmission requirements, but rather simply because they present a much smaller footprint for the tower owner/operator to lease. Generally speaking, tower sites are leased by the square foot and it doesn't come cheap in urban areas.

True. But my understanding is that FCC rules on antenna efficiency and radiation patterns make horizontal arrays impractical for the AM band.
Yes, but the difference in the cost of real estate required is very significant.
There is a reason AM transmission is vertically polarized. Go look it up.
