Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) apologized Wednesday night to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for shouting “You lie!” during President Obama’s healthcare speech before a joint session of Congress.

Emanuel accepted Wilson’s apology on behalf of the president, according to a Democratic source familiar with the call.

In addition to his phone call to Emanuel, Wilson also issued a statement separately, calling his comments “inappropriate and regrettable.”

Well, I’m sorry to hear he apologized, but I think it was probably a sensible gesture in the long run...and now he should go on television and explain exactly why Obama is a liar, not only about health care for illegals, but in every single thing he said last night. Joe Wilson has got the public attention and he should use it.

I think it was smart to apologize here since it was an inappropriate outburst for that forum. THAT BEING SAID... I’m glad he said it. He was right...it is a lie. I tweeted him and thanked him for speaking for the rest of us who were yelling the same thing at our TVs. You know what this is like? It’s like when an attorney asks a leading question to a witness or adds commentary that he knows will be objected to...but simultaneously knows that people can’t UNHEAR something once it’s been said, even if a judge tells them to disregard the comment. Likewise... we’ve heard this now. And like Palin’s “death panel” comment, we can’t unhear it. You can’t unring a bell. And Americans now have a reason to look into the possibility that illegals would in fact be covered. Consider for a moment that a GOP amendment...the Heller Amendment... that would ban illegals was struck down on party lines. If illegals were not to be covered, then why vote it down? ...

I agree with you 100%. And I have sent Mr. Joe Wilson a contribution to back up my enthusiasm for his passion (and his apology).

‘I'm sorry for breaking the respectful decorum of this event by calling out the President for lying. I can see now that if we stood up and called out each lie as they were spoken in this hall, no speech would ever get finished. Yes he was lying and in the previous sentence had called out other politicians (aka Sarah Palin), but in this hall he is the only one who is allowed to call anyone a liar.’

My opinion, to hell with the decorum. Read history and see all of the name calling and fistfights that went on in Congress in the past. This President has insulated himself from any criticism. Someone has to yell loud enough for his big ears to hear the discontent.
