This week's rise in the price of a loaf of bread was LESS THAN EXPECTED:

When there are three jobs left, the numbers will show a two-job-loss.

HEAR! HEAR!

The Recession is OVER! YEE HAW!

Let’s all celebrate the environment on 9/11 instead of remembering our loss!

evidence that companies are laying off fewer workers as the economy improves.

Horse hockey! I wonder how they count small businesses that will simply be in danger of folding if they lay off any more. Many are on "skeleton crews" right now.

I’m a country boy, pay attention and steal yourself, this may be a little gruesome for some.

Growing up in the country I watched my father “stick” many a hog. He would plunge a long bladed knife under the neck and into the main artery or possibly the heart itself. When he pulled the knife out a fountain of red blood would shoot out. As the hog lay on its side and kicked the flow of blood would begin to slow and soon would be just a trickle.

Now the interesting thing is that NOBODY in the country was dumb enough to say that the slowing of blood flow meant that the hog was “on the road to recovery”.

Now is anyone confused about my meaning?

I have worked at the same business since 1982 and this is the first time I have ever had to ask for unemployment benefits.

I don’t know how much I’ve paid into the system for the last 27 years, but I still feels like sh*t having to ask for it.

Obama you suck, cut taxes and do what is proven to revive this economy fast, not your ideologue approach that has never worked even in the best of times.

Watching McCain give Obama the big thumbs up during his speech last night made me sick to my stomach, are those two really the best our nation has to offer? We have to do better, all I can think of now are my kids and what they’re getting handed here. If it wasn’t for them and my wife I swear I would be thinking of endgame now. I wonder how many people are deep down as pissed off as I am...

David Rosenberg: Everything Is Still Horrible

[snip]

We did some digging and found that all of the world economic rebound in 2009 — that is, 100% and then some — is being accounted for by fiscal stimulus. There is still nary a sign that the global recovery is being sustained by organic private sector activity."

What am I missing here?

550,000 jobs lost per week times 52 weeks = 28.6 MILLION jobs lost in a year?

You're only counting who gets let go. You have to subtract everybody who ends up finding a job. If 550k filed for unemployment last week, and 350k of other people finally found a job, net loss would be 200k.

Some 3.4 million households will get a filing this year, up from the prior estimate of 3 million to 3.2 million, and sharply higher than 2.3 million filings last year.

If the forecast is realized, it will be more than four times the filings in 2005, before the deepest housing crash since the Great Depression began.

Remember, the loss of summer seasonal jobs has not been picked up yet. I think those numbers will show up in October. So much for the rate of job loss slowing. Of course, Onada’s man. Bernacke, touted the unemployment slowdown in August as a sign the economy was recovering. All they were, were the seasonal hires.

Yep. When you're down to just the owner and his wife running a five man operation, it's a little tough to lay any more off.
