Both Sides Condemn Outburst; Wilson Apologizes (Truth yelling Congressman chastised)

Republican Rep. Joe Wilson shouted "Lie! You lie," at President Barack Obama during Wednesday's address to a joint session of Congress, earning repudiations from his own party and from Democrats.

Wilson took exception to a passage in Obama's speech on health care in which the president said illegal immigrants would not get health insurance coverage under the overhaul.

"There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false -- the reforms I'm proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally," Obama said.

Wilson answered the comment with his outburst, loud enough to be picked up on television and in such an unusually disruptive fashion as to merit reprimands from across the political spectrum.

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, a fellow South Carolinian, said Wilson's heckling was more damaging to South Carolina's reputation than the exploits of Republican Gov. Mark Sanford, who admitted to having an extramarital affair with an Argentinian woman.

"I thought he [the governor] had embarrassed us as much as we could be embarrassed. But to have a congressman use the floor of the House of Representatives in a joint session to insult the president the way Joe Wilson did is as embarrassing as anything anyone could think of," Clyburn said. "Our state can do without this."

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and a fellow veteran, denounced the comment as "totally disrespectful and called on Wilson to "apologize immediately" during a post-speech interview on CNN.

When truth is lies and lies are truth, one will always be condemned for telling the truth by those who’ve created the illusion.

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” Isaiah 5:20

Anyone who makes a public statement against Joe Wilson on this should be crossed off the support list. If John McCain had shown half Wilson’s (pre-apology) courage, he might have been president.

Congressman Joe Wilson recognized that his conduct was improper and immediately gave a genuine apology ...

Exactly, it was not what he said, it was where/when he said it. The apology was not so much to 0bama as it was recognition of an inappropriate outburst (no matter how many of us agree with the sentiment). And if Wilson has to offer another, from the Floor of the House probably, in order to avoid punishment, censure, so be it. It will not detract from the veracity whatever.

Either you obey the rules of decorum or you have anarchy ... No matter how much you (and I) agree with Joe Wilson, what he did was wrong and he knew that as soon as he did it

I think you and I may be a party of the short few who recognize this. It doesn't matter that the Dems have practiced disorderly behavior in the past. It doesn't matter how many incidents people cite where MOC's have called a president, be it GW Bush, Clinton, GHW Bush, Reagan, Carter, etal, a liar in a speech on the Floor, the speech and debate clause in Section 6 allows them to do so without penalty. It was a mistake, however accurate or understandable in the circumstances.

A mistake -- not the end of the world. Wilson will come out of this just fine.

Why is Wilson apologizing for simply stating the truth?

The answer to your question lies in the title:
Both Sides Condemn Outburst; Wilson Apologizes (Truth yelling Congressman chastised)

The second half of the answer is that the republicans prefer being in the minority and sucking up to their masters, the demonRATS.

DONATE TO JOE WILSON'S 2010 CAMPAIGN!!

I heard what he said, and he was forced by the "leadership" of the Republican party (IS there any?) to apologize, but he didn't back off the fact that illegals WILL receive healthcare if this bill passes.

DONATE!! He's got both parties to fight, but he is standing up FOR the people.

If it were me, I would hve told the RINO ledership to go off somewhere and perform a biological impossibility.

Any Republican who condemns Rep. Joe Wilson’s Moment of Truth represents Washington, not the people.

Thanks for posting that link. I sent a note. It wasn’t very nice but I don’t give a crap! Excuse me, but it was nice to see a Republican with guts for change. I haven’t seen that since B-1 Bob would give his speeches!

Apparently you are right. It seems that too many conservatives believe in acting like liberals. Reacting emotionally leads to poor "knee-jerk" decisions.

Hyper-emotionalism does not conflate with strong, deeply held beliefs. You can have as strong beliefs as the shouters without ostentatious displays.

Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater, and William F. Buckley all held very strong core beliefs and at least Reagan and Goldwater were capable of giving rousing speeches, but neither would be caught dead making the sort of remarks that many here are now advocating.

Civility and decorum are essential in a republican form of government. The rule of law is essential for civilization to exist. Beat them down with unrelenting reason and civility, not emotional outbursts and name calling.

I believe that anger is a useful tool, but it must be used judiciously and proper timing is essential. I'm not certain that what Wilson did was bad as it serves as an exclamation point to the lies that Obama routinely tells.

Hmm...seems I got a little wordy hear, sorry.

Too many juveniles throwing tantrums here. Frustration is legitimate, but it rarely leads to constructive debate or action.

Not saying I'm perfect, but I have learned to throttle my anger throught he valve of time. Allowing a thought to stew a little while generally leads to a more measured response, more clearly expressed.

I am. I still wish he’d not apologized the way he did. There is a way to do that kind of thing and stick it in their eye at the same time.

My note to leader Boehner:

I would like to express my heartfelt support for Rep. Joe Wilson in making his bold remark during the President's speech on "healthcare" and my disgust for those in the Republican Party who have lambasted his actions. I am outside of North Carolina, but will be financially supporting Rep. Wilson's election campaign, contrary to my financial support for the RNC, which is infested with RINO's and RINO values. I have a strong feeling that I am not alone in my sentiments by a long shot, regarding both Rep. Wilson and the RNC, and you would be well served to listen to your base. President Obama openly called those who question his proposed healthcare legislation "liars" - is it not fair play to call him on his actions?

I will vigorously opposed ANY Republican legislator, both financially and through my free spreech rights as never before, who condemns the bold opposition to this diabolical direction in our government at every turn. You have been warned by me and, I'm sure, by millions of other like-minded conservatives.

Respectfully,
XXXX XXXX
(FW Dude)
