Card leans toward run for Senate (MA)
The Boston Globe ^ | September 10, 2009 | Jim O’Sullivan

Republican Andrew H. Card Jr., who was a chief of staff under former president George W. Bush, said last night that he would probably run for the seat left vacant by the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, prompting another prospective candidate, state Senator Scott Brown, to rule out a bid if Card entered.

Card, who served four terms as a state representative for Holbrook before taking a succession of jobs in Washington, told the News Service the chances were “much better than 50 percent that I will find a way to say yes.’’ He said he would probably make a decision this weekend, after observing the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

At a GOP State Committee meeting in a Newton hotel, Card and Brown surprised many Republican insiders, as Card showed increasing enthusiasm for the seat and Brown, a Wrentham Republican who on Tuesday had said he was “about 90 percent’’ sure he would run, backed off.

Card isn’t my choice. He’s way too much the Washington insider.

Not sure what to make of Card. Seems like a RINO, but could be wrong.

I’d take the republican candidate most likely to win Ted’s seat in MA , even if it is a rhino. The bragging points alone would be worth it.

Yeah, but isn’t he about the closest thing you could get to a conservative out of Massachusetts? I know he’s a RINO, but maybe better him than whatever Kennedy-clone would probably end up with the seat? Tough call.

probably doesnt stand a chance - he was in the Bush administration that alone makes him poisonous especially in MA.

A RINO filling the seat formerly held by the Chappaquiddick Commie? Yeah, that would only be about a 10,000% improvement! A hardcore GOP über-conservative would never win in Massachusetts anyway.

Card would be a Godsend!

He’ll never get elected, way too close to Pres. Bush.

Card would be a Godsend!<>I'm not so sure. Te last thing we need is another Olympia Snowe or John McCain snatching victory from certain defeat on behalf of Democrats. Do we really need another Lincoln Chaffee? Realistically, how in the world would Card get reelected without having to actively work against Republicans 70%+ of the time? And he would almost have to! Obama and Democrats would get one more RINO to claim bipartisan cover for their heinous bills. No thanks. How about a blue-dog Dem instead?

Card is probably as good as you can get in MA. He probably has the money to win.

You’re probably right. I can handle it if he’s less than conservative, given his constituancy. But I think that most voters, regardless of ideology, are tired of Washington insider types.

35% tops in a face off with a Democrat. 40% if he’s lucky, but he won’t win. We need Curt.

Oh, I agree 100%. If there was a better alternative I wouldn’t touch somebody like Andy Card with a 10-foot pole. We need a lot more Sarah Palins and Joe the Plumbers and a lot fewer Andy Cards in positions of power.

There's a big difference because the majority party controls committee assignments and the agenda. Whatever his faults, Andy Card would be a huge improvement over Ted Kennedy.

Look, its freaking Massachussetts. This seat was held by one of worst senators for decades. At this point my expectations would be low.

Not just that, he’s waaayyyy to closely ties to the Bushes. Of course, if this were any of another 30 or so states, that just might help him. But not in MA.

I still say Curt or bust. And it looks like bust.

Tim Cahiil for Governor and Scott Brown for Treasurer? I’d vote for them.
