Breaking: Senate votes to cut off federal funding for ACORN;
Hot Air ^ | September 14, 2009 | Ed Morrissey

Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) introduced an amendment to the HUD and Transportation appropriation bill to strip ACORN of all federal funding. A week ago, Johanns wouldn’t have gotten the amendment to the floor. Today, however, after three straight days of BigGovernment.com’s video exposés of ACORN offices in Washington DC, New York City, and Baltimore offering assistance to pimping, tax evasion, and trafficking in underage Salvadorean girls, Johanns not only got his vote — but he got an impressive bipartisan showing. The Senate passed the Johanns amendment 83-7. At the beginning of the vote, it appeared that Democrats might resist. Initially, a half-dozen Democrats cast votes in opposition to the amendment. A few more cast votes against it as the rest of the Senate voted, but the tide appeared to shift. More and more Democrats signed onto the amendment, and votes started changing. One male voice could be heard in the chamber saying, “I want to change my vote!” Among those who changed their votes: Tom Udall (D-NM), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), and Herb Kohl (D-WI).

ACORN has changed its name to COI - community organizers international - or something like that. Gotta get that international in there like all commie organizations.

So the devil may be in the details of "stopping funding for ACORN"

Even if a new organization arises from the slime, it will still take them time and resources to ramp up. If ACORN goes down, it will definately hinder their effectiveness in the ‘10 elections and census.

I’d been calling it Community Organizers International, but its actually Community Organizations International.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

Did anyone see this townhall insult by Pete Stark?

‘A senior citizen told Pete “don’t pee on my leg and then tell me it’s raining”, Pete’s reply: “I wouldn’t dignify you by peeing on your leg - I wouldn’t waste the urine”. Not exactly Congressional level behavior in my opinion...

That’s the man who told a reporter he’d effin throw him out the window.

Thanks! The votes could have been more against ACORN — I remember reading in email that Coburn had something today but cannot remember what it was.

Recall that Vermont goes easy on child rapists? That’s why I appreciated the comment at hotair.

Need to keep hitting it....That money isn’t going away...it’ll just keep getting redirected to the same people.

A huge amount of it is being recycled back to the congresscritters that voted it to ACORN in the first place. Bet on that.

Not sure, but I dont think they have received any stimulus $$ yet. They are eligible to apply for a share of 8.3 billion. The administration has been totally incompetent at getting the $$ out.

Any legislation with teeth will include language to cover any ACORN offshoots, affiliates, sister organizations, or front groups.

Yes, Burris’ seat will be open in 2010 and Gillinbrand (spell) NY was apppointed so she has to run. I don’t know about the others, but they’re all in the northeast, so I think they’re safe for democrats.

What’s up with several Republicans not voting?

McCain needs to be taken to task about this and others, like Burr, Coburn, Graham and Vitter have some explaining to do.

And KBH.........OOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEE! This is NOT gonna help her gubernatorial campaign. I know Gov. Perry will roast her for this.

Mikulski is up for re-election next year. I am a former resident of the People’s Republic of Maryland and nothing would please me more than to see Mikulski lose her seat.
