House near vote to admonish Wilson over 'You lie'

The proposed resolution of disapproval against Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina added to the already-toxic atmosphere of partisanship in the House. Democrats said Wilson's behavior during Obama's speech to Congress last week was an egregious display of disrespect for the president that could not be ignored. Republicans accused the majority party of hypocrisy and wasting the taxpayers' time.

"That's a very serious breach of decorum, and if it goes unaddressed then we will probably see other, worse breaches in the future," Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., said before floor debate began.

But Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, a member of the Republican leadership, countered, "Our economy is struggling, families are hurting. And yet, this Congress is poised to demand an apology from a man who has already apologized. It's a disappointment to millions of Americans."

The Office of the House Historian said the resolution, if approved, would mark the first time in the 220-year history of the House that a member had been admonished for speaking out while the president was giving an address. The vote was on a resolution of disapproval, less severe than other disciplinary action available to the House, including censure or expulsion.

Instead of honest debate, we’ve seen scare tactics … Well, the time for bickering is over. The time for games has passed.
(APPLAUSE)
. . .
Still, given all the misinformation that’s been spread over the past few months, … Some of people’s concerns have grown out of bogus claims spread by those whose only agenda is to kill reform at any cost. The best example is the claim, made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but by prominent politicians that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens.
Now, such a charge would be laughable if it weren’t so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie plain and simple.
(APPLAUSE)
. . .
So don’t pay attention to those scary stories about how your benefits will be cut — especially since some of the same folks who are spreading these tall tales have fought against Medicare in the past...

Joe should turn it into a speaking opportunity.

Absolutely. Joe could easily become the voice of the loyal opposition to Obummercare. The state media have skewered him as racist and he has a singular opportunity to explain on the state media why Obummercare is an unconstitutional raw deal.

Yeesh, these guys need to learn to let go. Wilson apologized, the Administration accepted it. End of story.

I also think the House pursues this at their own peril. A lot of people I know (including myself) felt the outburst wasn’t the best way to respond, but absolutely agreed with the underlying sentiment. The speech *wasn’t* straight talk, and people are tired, very tired, of getting shined on by the Administration and Congress on health care.

The congressional Democrats have been savaging Republicans and especially, President Bush, in and out of congress - for years - with not a scintilla of protest from the left-media or just about any Democrat, elected or otherwise.

I clearly recall the endless accusations from Democrats that 'Bush lied' about the WMD's in Iraq, and on and on and on. President Bush was booed by Democrats at the 2005 State of the Nation speech, with absolutely no consequence.

Now, they want to pretend that they're all offended because 'decorum' was disturbed? Gimme a break!

Go Joe! is right. Wilson called out the lying president and the Democrats, who have control of congress, want to punish him for his honesty. When Barney Frank doesn't want to sign on to this ridiculous Declaration, you know it must be pretty toxic. I hope it fails and embarrasses Nancy Pelosi, if that's even possible, anymore.

I cannot believe 7 Republicans voted to admonish. At least 12 Democrats voted not to.
