KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Police say a man shot an intruder who was armed with a baseball bat Tuesday night.

Mark Farrell, 24, of Beatty, entered Jim Westman's house armed with a wooden baseball bat, said Klamath Falls Sheriff Timothy Evinger in a news release.

Farrell attempted to assault Westman with the bat and Westman fired one round from a .22-caliber rifle, which hit Farrell in the right forearm. Farrell continued to assault Westman after he was shot, Evinger said.

Roxann Klobucar, Westman's mother, was able to wrestle the bat from Farrell. Klobucar hit Farrell several times in the head until he was subdued, Evinger said. Click here to find out more!

Prior to entering the house, Farrell damaged Westman's vehicle with the bat, Evinger said.

Evinger said the motive appears related to a theft from Farrell about a month ago.

Farrell was transported to a nearby hospital. He is expected to face charges of burglary, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

Detectives are continuing to investigate.

In my experience, a 22 LR hollow-point usually has enough velocity to totally explode both the round and whatever it hits, at least at close range.

Do a little experiment.

Fill two plastic jugs with water. Shoot one with a .22 round. You will see a small hole on either side of the jug where the bullet entered and then exited.

Shoot the other with a .45 round. The jug will likely split apart and water will splash everywhere. Very impressive.

I do love over-kill. I have .380 ACP hydra-shok. And bannan-clip 7.62 Ruger mini-14 with hollow-point as back up. All locked and loaded.

Amen. The 1911 Colt - after a century: still the perfect handgun.

It's hard to argue against your point, but I use the "Judge" for primary home defense. It's loaded with two #4 shot .410s followed by two 000 Buck .410s followed by a .45 Long Colt.

My backup is a Glock 22 in .40 caliber.

I own a Judge and use it as the "ride-along" in my truck. My primary home defense weapon is this little jewel:

Every third round is a rifled slug.

I know a boat captain, runs in the Caribbean, South America. He caries a NA .22 on 5lb mono around his neck. No permit, no license, illegal in most countries, but nice to have walking back to the docks. One time he got arrested and spent the night in jail with it, undiscovered. Try that with a .38 and up.

That’s a Ruger ranch rifle - looks like a mini-14 though. And the M-16 round is .223 but will go through cinder-blocks laughing all the way. Size matters, but energy delivered to the target is also in the velocity. Energy goes up as the square of the velocity. It’s only proportional to the mass.

I agree that the Taurus “Judge” is an amazingly versatile weapon. I’m just a little old-fashioned in that regard, so for primary home defense I prefer to keep a Winchester Defender (18” bbl.) with two primary loads of #6 shot, followed by 00 buck. I’m still reticent about using handgun rounds within the house due to wall penetration.

Two problems with frangible ammo - 1. I can’t even find standard .45 ammunition these days, and 2. Lack of stopping power in critical quick-action situations where a center mass aim point is necessitated. With an open choke shotgun at 6-10 feet, you really don’t have to worry about that - “close” is good enough.

I must not yet be awake. I saw the headliine, and clicked it, thinking the intruder was armed with a small flying mammal.

“My thought exactly. Have 4 clips of 230 gr JHP .45 first then restort to the .22 or maybe from the looks of this case .45 first then the bat!”

Do you realize how loud a.45 round would be inside a house?
your ears would be ringing from now on. I value my hearing too much to use a .45 indoors. I’ll use a shotgun thank you.
