China detects deadly nerve gas at border with NKorea: report

1 hr 51 mins ago

TOKYO (AFP) – China has detected deadly nerve gas at its border with North Korea and suspects an accidental release inside the secretive state, a Japanese news report said Friday.

The Chinese military is strengthening its surveillance activities after detecting the highly virulent sarin gas in November last year and in February in Liaoning province, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported, citing anonymous sources from the Chinese military.

Sounds more like a desperate attempt at border control than an accidental release. I wonder how persistent it might be.

Maybe the “virulent gas” is actually made of bacteria or virii.

SNIPPET: “Fourteen years ago today Aum Shinrikyo released sarin gas on the Tokyo subway.”

SNIPPET: “A final note - Aum Shinrikyo operatives, on the order of the cult’s leader, underwent flight training in Florida. There is no evidence that they made any attempts to use this training. It is just an odd, disturbing coincidence.”

Syrian blast was chemical warhead glitch-magazine (Update)
Reuters ^ | 9/19/2007 | unattributed
Posted on September 19, 2007 12:06:09 PM PDT by mojito

An explosion at a Syrian military complex in July which killed 15 soldiers was a bid to arm a chemical warhead and was not caused by a heatwave as Damascus said, according to Jane’s Defence Weekly.

Syria had said temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) caused an ammunition dump to explode, killing the soldiers and wounding another 50.

But Jane’s Defence, quoting Syrian defence sources, said the blast occurred as Syrian weapons experts, with Iranian backing, were attempting to activate a 500-km-range (300-mile-range) “Scud C” missile with a mustard gas warhead.

“The explosion occurred when fuel caught alight in the missile production laboratory,” the magazine said, quoting the sources.

“The blast dispersed chemical agents (including VX and Sarin nerve agents and mustard blister agent) across the storage facility and outside. Other Iranian engineers were seriously injured with chemical burns to exposed body parts.”

The sources said dozens of Iranian missile engineers were killed along with the 15 Syrians.

The magazine also pointed out that the explosion occurred at about 4:30 a.m., two hours before sunrise, when temperatures have barely begun to rise, let alone reach 50 C.

Syrian officials were not immediately available to comment on the Jane’s story.

The article, to be published in the Sept. 29 edition, said the Syrian-Iranian cooperation at the classified military production facility in Aleppo, northern Syria, was the result of a two-year-old weapons agreement between the two nations.

Under the deal, the magazine said, Iran agreed to supply Syria with weapons and ammunition, train Syrian personnel, and help transfer technology for weapons of mass destruction, including chemical-warfare systems.

It said the agreement, signed in November 2005, had led to the establishment of five pilot facilities in Syria aimed at producing chemical weapon precursors.

As a result of the explosion on July 26, Jane’s said an Iranian-Syrian programme to arm short-range ballistic missiles with chemical warheads had been aborted.

“Facts About Sarin”

SNIPPET - Quote:

What sarin is

Sarin is a human-made chemical warfare agent classified as a nerve agent. Nerve agents are the most toxic and rapidly acting of the known chemical warfare agents. They are similar to certain kinds of pesticides (insect killers) called organophosphates in terms of how they work and what kind of harmful effects they cause. However, nerve agents are much more potent than organophosphate pesticides.

Sarin originally was developed in 1938 in Germany as a pesticide.
Sarin is a clear, colorless, and tasteless liquid that has no odor in its pure form. However, sarin can evaporate into a vapor (gas) and spread into the environment.

Sarin is also known as GB.

Where sarin is found and how it is used

Sarin and other nerve agents may have been used in chemical warfare during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
Sarin was used in two terrorist attacks in Japan in 1994 and 1995.
Sarin is not found naturally in the environment.

SNIPPET - Quote:

How people can protect themselves, and what they should do if they are exposed to sarin

Recovery from sarin exposure is possible with treatment, but the antidotes available must be used quickly to be effective. Therefore, the best thing to do is avoid exposure:

Leave the area where the sarin was released and get to fresh air. Quickly moving to an area where fresh air is available is highly effective in reducing the possibility of death from exposure to sarin vapor.

If the sarin release was outdoors, move away from the area where the sarin was released. Go to the highest ground possible, because sarin is heavier than air and will sink to low-lying areas.

If the sarin release was indoors, get out of the building.
If people think they may have been exposed, they should remove their clothing, rapidly wash their entire body with soap and water, and get medical care as quickly as possible.

Removing and disposing of clothing:

Quickly take off clothing that has liquid sarin on it. Any clothing that has to be pulled over the head should be cut off the body instead of pulled over the head. If possible, seal the clothing in a plastic bag. Then seal the first plastic bag in a second plastic bag. Removing and sealing the clothing in this way will help protect people from any chemicals that might be on their clothes.
If clothes were placed in plastic bags, inform either the local or state health department or emergency personnel upon their arrival. Do not handle the plastic bags.

If helping other people remove their clothing, try to avoid touching any contaminated areas, and remove the clothing as quickly as possible.
Washing the body:

As quickly as possible, wash any liquid sarin from the skin with large amounts of soap and water. Washing with soap and water will help protect people from any chemicals on their bodies.

Rinse the eyes with plain water for 10 to 15 minutes if they are burning or if vision is blurred.

If sarin has been swallowed, do not induce vomiting or give fluids to drink.
Seek medical attention immediately. Dial 911 and explain what has happened.

How sarin exposure is treated

Treatment consists of removing sarin from the body as soon as possible and providing supportive medical care in a hospital setting. Antidotes are available for sarin. They are most useful if given as soon as possible after exposure.

They have supported the brutal Kim regime for cynical, political purposes, and I believe China will have some pay-back in the future.

I have always wondered why China would allow a N. Korean nuke. Things change, and the chances of a DPRK nuke going off in Beijing are much higher than it going off in the USA. They share a border, have many ethnic Koreans in China, and have Kim as a puppet. Doesn’t sound very stable to me.

Its sounds like a test. There is nerve gas that is 5 times as potent. Its called Novichok. Its the deadliest nerve agent ever made.

“‘North Korea possesses 13 types of biological weapons’”

SNIPPET: “SEOUL: North Korea is thought to have 13 types of viruses and germs which can be used in biological weapons, as well as up to 5,000 tons of chemical weapons, South Korea’s defence ministry said Monday.

In a report to parliament, the ministry said the communist North has one of the world’s largest stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. The list of diseases that could be caused by the biological weapons includes cholera, yellow fever, smallpox, eruptive typhus, typhoid fever and dysentery, it said. The ministry estimated its neighbour’s stockpile of chemical weapons at between 2,500 to 5,000 tons.

The assertions that the North has chemical and biological weapons, in addition to its nuclear and conventional weaponry, are not new. But Monday’s report gave more details of the alleged biological arsenal. The International Crisis Group said in a report in June that Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities are the greatest threat, but it also has a large chemical weapons stockpile and a suspected biological weapons programme.

The chemical weapons could be deliverable by artillery or missile to cause massive civilian casualties in South Korea, the Brussels-based think-tank said. The stockpile includes between 2,500-5,000 tons of mustard gas, phosgene, blood agents, sarin, tabun and persistent nerve agents and can be delivered by long-range artillery, missiles, aircraft and naval vessels, it said.

Nuclear sites: The South Korean defence minister said his country knows of about 100 sites linked to North Korea’s nuclear programme”

Lots of chems and bios (production facililites) are way up north near China where they cannot be easily attacked by US and ROK troops in a preemptive effort. Great going there, though, pissing off the Chinese.
